We also decided to have a nurse come in to our office tomorrow and give everyone the flu shot. I in no way think it will help stop this bug (perhaps), but it might help distinguish the regular flu from this bug should it ever be an issue. On a more practical level, it will likly save me a whole lot of money if I even loose one or two people for a few days to the regular flu this year.

Some people can contract contagious diseases at a distance of several thousand miles, or through their television sets. Didn't you know?

I always get a flu shot. They are usually good for three or four strains, but since they have to be prepared in advance, they give no protection against new strains that appear late in the year. Like this one.

Otherwise, wash your hands a lot, do not rub your eyes and stay away from crowds, etc.

Day 4 since the Mexican government announced to the world it had a problem (because it could no longer hide it). If this is the real deal or just another news event blown out of proportion to distract from other things and will be just a memory 60 days from now, we will know soon as the incubation period of the next batch of infectees will be reached before the end of the week. So geometric ramp up or fizzle. What it be?

RWS, I would call that a tail-tale, and I enjoyed it myself, but I like to egg Gloria on, as she gives this forum a peculiar je ne sais quoi.

Thought I would pass the following notice from the U.S. embassy (I got tricked in to giving them my email once). I love how calm and matter of fact the tone of these messages are when it is the U.S. that might be the source of some threat, but when they send a message that something in Chile is a threat they have super alarmist tones (e.g. the regular student protest in downtown Santiago).

To: U.S. Citizens in Chile
From: Christian D. Bendsen, Consul General
Date: April 27, 2009
Subject: Warden Message 2009-04

Notice to the Wardens: Please disseminate this warden message to U.S. citizens in your warden zone.

The United States Embassy advises U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Chile that the Government of Chile has taken measures in response to the outbreak of swine flu in the United States and Mexico. Officials of the Chilean Health Ministry have begun screening passengers arriving in Chile from the U.S. and Mexico, both by ship and by airplane, for symptoms of flu. Screening includes the use of passive fever scanners. If necessary, adult travelers arriving in the Metropolitan Region who are suspected of having swine flu will be transferred immediately for evaluation to "Hospital del Tórax", minor travelers will be taken to "Hospital Calvo Mackenna", and all travelers arriving at Regions outside the Metropolitan Region will be transferred to the tertiary care hospitals (hospitales bases) in those regions. More information on the Chilean Government measures is available in Spanish on the Ministry of Health's web site: minsal.cl.

64 confirmed in the states

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... refer=home

I find it interesting in this article that essentially we have already met the definition of stage 6 pandemic but the WHO has not raised the level.

A pandemic, rated 6 on the Who’s six-step alert system, is an unexpected outbreak of a new contagious disease that spreads from person-to-person across borders. In such cases, almost no one has natural immunity.
