Personally I would not consider taking a flu vaccine of any kind, nor do I recommend them to family or friends. They have a history of not working, and the side effects often outweigh the benefits. But then I am not fond of vaccines of any stripe...though in certain situations some are indeed warranted. I agree with my hubby (nopat) and his comments on medicine. As a direct entry midwife my motto has always been 'less is more...' and it has never proven me wrong.
Remember the last Swine Flu vaccine during Johnson's gov't produced an epidemic of Guillian-Barre syndrome.
Just my 2 cents worth.

RWS. You are absolutely entitled to do as you wish. But I would caution you as to what you term 'the experts'. Do your homework first.

Just to clarify, "Stork", I consider you and your husband to be the experts posting in this thread. I accepted as true what you and he wrote above.

Good article from October 3, 2008 on flu vaccines by a doc.

My question: …and if they become mandatory?

On Thursday Prof Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer, told the NHS to plan for the possibility
of up to 65,000 deaths from the disease this winter

That rate would result in 16,000 or more deaths in Chile, and nearly a third of a million in the United States.

'Good to prepare, but I hope, pray, and anticipate that Sir Liam is unrealistic in his own anticipation.

Dr.Tini Garske (epidemiologist, works with population models) et al. published an article in the July 14, 2009 issue of the British Medical Journal: "current fatality ratios are around 0.5%. This rate is similar to that from seasonal influenza."
The true ratio is impossible to calculate because mild to moderate cases are not seeking medical attention and the bad cases are the ones being tested.
Also, I just read that Tamiflu effectiveness is based ONLY on in vitro testing by the CDC. There is no human clinical data available.

There seems to very little on front page news-that seems odd.

A San Francisco teenager has been diagnosed with a strain of swine flu that is resistant to the common antiviral drug Tamiflu - an important milestone in the pandemic's evolution.

The case suggests swine flu - a form of influenza Type A, subtype H1N1 - is capable of not only developing drug resistance but also spreading between humans in that resistant form, said Dr. Arthur Reingold, professor at UC Berkeley School of Public Health.

A lot of stories searching Google news

(AP) – 2 hours ago

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Agricultural authorities in Argentina have declared an alert to prevent the spread of swine flu among pigs.

Farm sanitation chief Jorge Dillon says the flu's symptoms are fairly benign for infected pigs and the pig outbreak poses no health risk to humans.

Nevertheless, agriculture officials on Friday said they will try to keep people infected with swine flu away from hog farms, where pigs are being infected by humans. It is recommending procedures to prevent pig-to-pig infections too.

Argentina has confirmed at least 137 human deaths related to swine flu, the highest national tally after the U.S.

LONDON — An ugly scramble is brewing over the swine flu vaccine — and when it becomes available, Britain, the United States and other nations could find that the contracts they signed with pharmaceutical companies are easily broken.

Experts warn that during a global epidemic, which the world is in now, governments may be under tremendous pressure to protect their own citizens first before allowing companies to ship doses of vaccine out of the country.

That does not bode well for many nations, including the United States, which makes only 20 percent of the regular flu vaccines it uses, or Britain, where all of its flu vaccines are produced abroad.

And what happened to the (quashed?) stories that many experts believe this thing was "built" in a lab.

How unfortunate if the same folks who "made" this "lab error" will not live to see the profits from the soon to be neutered anti-virals and ineffective because of out of control mutations (and other reasons described previously) vaccines.

Or maybe it was all about population control all along. :alien:

hey, hey, a wardens message. Just in time to let you know that you have h1n1 and are completely ....

I just love the timely and totally random way these things come out just to remind U.S. citizens that under no circumstances will the U.S. embassy or government assist them, but by the way you should be alarmed about things that no one else in the country you are visiting is alarmed about.

Seems they have issued a travel advisory for Argentina.

Warden Message
Santiago
July 17, 2009

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information
regarding human cases of 2009-H1N1 Influenza, sometimes referred to as
swine flu or novel H1N1. The Chilean Ministry of Health (http://www.minsal.cl)
has reported 10,491 cases which have been confirmed by laboratory tests.
Local authorities have adopted a number of measures to address the
pandemic, such as hiring more personnel in public hospitals to handle
increased demand for medical consultations, procuring additional
equipment, and establishing procedures for distributing antiviral
treatments and tracking the spread of the disease. For more information,
please visit the following website: http://www.pandemia.cl.

The U.S. Department of State issued an H1N1 Influenza Travel Alert on
July 14, 2009 for U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Argentina.
U.S. citizens traveling outside of Chile can access State Department
travel alerts on H1N1 Influenza and other concerns at the following
website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_t ... _1766.html.

American citizens should be aware that the U.S. Embassy Santiago cannot
demand their immediate release if they have been detained or quarantined
in accordance with local public health and legal authorities.

Any questions or concerns about influenza or other illnesses should be
directed to a medical professional. Although the U.S. Embassy cannot
provide medical advice or provide medical services to the public, a list
of hospitals and doctors can be found on our website at:
under U.S. citizens & FAQ.

Please note that the U.S. Embassy in Santiago is NOT advising Americans
in Chile to depart. At this time, the Embassy advises that Americans
review the guidance provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
the World Health Organization, and make their own decisions about
whether to remain in Chile.
