eeuu, that’s a pretty comprehensive list of precautions, but you neglected to include in your advice for people not to keep any swine in their living quarters, particularly in the bedroom, even though some women may take advantage of the situation and kick some of their partners out of the house.

I recommend you stay in front of your computer and surf the Chile forum, excluding all contact with humans and swine until the crisis passes.

Then also, a lot of you are already doing that and are thus immune to the swine flu. It has to find you to kill you (just like your other half).

First, I want to caution that the following is a collection of just antidotal reports on the web, but if true in any respect are a bit disturbing.

These postings on the BBC web site that claim to be from health care workers and others in Mexico claiming that the numbers being reported are really much worse:

Wow. Is this scary or what? My hubby read the news to me just last night. We are flying to the US this coming Monday, so now we are really concerned. My hubby is a doctor as well and it has certainly gotten his attention. We are thinking of wearing masks for the whole flight, what do the rest of you think? It will be a pain and make us look odd...but who cares.
I plan to take some echinacea and vit. c with me along with the supplement Airborne...and hopefully we will be fine. But we will be in the US for 2 mths. and traveling a fair amt. from the east coast to the midwest...so again I hope we are fine. Wish you all good health as well.

My missus wears a mask during all long haul flights, has done for the past 5 yrs. It's embarrassing to be with her but hey, this is no longer about looking cool. I used to get horrible upper respiratory infections every Jan following trips back to the UK, even developed pneumonia once. Now I take ascorbyl palmitate every day (1 tablet) after dinner. Haven't had a cold in 18 months and I have been on a lot of flights. YMMV

My wife just pointed out that hopefully this will be the death of the silly tradition of people kissing each other on the cheek when they meet.

As far as air travel, I find that anytime I travel to any new region (including back to the States) I get sick if I don't take precautions. After a while you just get no immunity to the local bugs. Water, food, and I am sure the local cold are all foreign.

We almost always get a cold or flu when we go in to the Patagonia. I think it is because it is so isolated from the rest of World that it develops its own strains that just round and round in the local population that are immune to it. We get it, and spend a 3-4 days in bed almost every time we go there.

If this becomes truly pandemic, then I will have to revise my precautions regarding keeping the immune system strong when already infected as it is the 20-40 age group, like in the Spanish flu, who are dying,

This is the cytokine storm where a very efficient and working immune system launches an attack on the virus infecting the lungs and suffocates the victim.

So if infected and you are entering the cytokine storm stage, the key is to temporarily weaken the immune system in some way. The ultimate, with no specialized meds desperate measure would be to down 100g of sugar or take shots of alcohol.

Prevention strategies still hold. Better never to get into a cytokine storm position in the first place.

There goes the stock market. I am suspecting a peso / dollar move is in the works here.

I'll take that prescription. Besides a bottle of good single malt Wisky is much cheaper than tamiflu, and I can pick it up at my local grocery store. :D Chile is well prepared, with a population that drinks like a bunch of fish all year around and a large stock pile of good wines, pisco, and chicha sufficient to kill everyone in Chile many times over.

BBC International has a good link to eyewitness accounts from Mexico, several of which are from doctors. This seems to be more accurate information than the news stories. I hope that I'm allowed to post this link: 8) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/8018428.stm

Totally allowed to post that, accept that I posted it already a bit earlier. Keep similar stuff rolling however.

Still, I find it one of more fascinating and contradictory to the main media is reporting so far.
