I would begin taking precautions now. Masks, immune system builders like gram doses of Vitamin C (before you get flu symptoms). Broad spectrum stuff with anti-viral effects if needed - Olive Leaf extract, MMS, CS. And especially stuff to keep your dwelling sterilized and purify water and rinse food an extra step if needed - cloro, hydrogen peroxide etc. Having food stored so you do not have to visit the store so often and be around other people during the outbreak would be a sensible plan (you already do this - food provisions - for earthquakes, right?). Get some pajaritos and powdered whole milk with no additives to make kefir to keep the good bugs in your system plentiful. And wash your hands frequently with soap that suds up copiously.

The Tamiflu (remember Donald Rumsfield?) and similar manufacturers will make a killing on this thing. Anyone know how much that stuff costs at the Cruz Verde/Ahumada/Salco racket?

Movies to watch for entertainment purposes only: The Andromeda strain, and the remake, The Omega Man, The Stand, Outbreak, 28 Days Later …… :!:

eeuu, that’s a pretty comprehensive list of precautions, but you neglected to include in your advice for people not to keep any swine in their living quarters, particularly in the bedroom, even though some women may take advantage of the situation and kick some of their partners out of the house.

I recommend you stay in front of your computer and surf the Chile forum, excluding all contact with humans and swine until the crisis passes.

Then also, a lot of you are already doing that and are thus immune to the swine flu. It has to find you to kill you (just like your other half).

First, I want to caution that the following is a collection of just antidotal reports on the web, but if true in any respect are a bit disturbing.

These postings on the BBC web site that claim to be from health care workers and others in Mexico claiming that the numbers being reported are really much worse:

Wow. Is this scary or what? My hubby read the news to me just last night. We are flying to the US this coming Monday, so now we are really concerned. My hubby is a doctor as well and it has certainly gotten his attention. We are thinking of wearing masks for the whole flight, what do the rest of you think? It will be a pain and make us look odd...but who cares.
I plan to take some echinacea and vit. c with me along with the supplement Airborne...and hopefully we will be fine. But we will be in the US for 2 mths. and traveling a fair amt. from the east coast to the midwest...so again I hope we are fine. Wish you all good health as well.

My missus wears a mask during all long haul flights, has done for the past 5 yrs. It's embarrassing to be with her but hey, this is no longer about looking cool. I used to get horrible upper respiratory infections every Jan following trips back to the UK, even developed pneumonia once. Now I take ascorbyl palmitate every day (1 tablet) after dinner. Haven't had a cold in 18 months and I have been on a lot of flights. YMMV

My wife just pointed out that hopefully this will be the death of the silly tradition of people kissing each other on the cheek when they meet.

As far as air travel, I find that anytime I travel to any new region (including back to the States) I get sick if I don't take precautions. After a while you just get no immunity to the local bugs. Water, food, and I am sure the local cold are all foreign.

We almost always get a cold or flu when we go in to the Patagonia. I think it is because it is so isolated from the rest of World that it develops its own strains that just round and round in the local population that are immune to it. We get it, and spend a 3-4 days in bed almost every time we go there.
