we have had friends bring weetbix in before (not for us, for themselves) in their luggage etc, never had a problem, but always declared it. So maybe if you have a visitor or colleague coming in soon????

As a Briton I lived 28 years in Australia and have vegemite always in the fridge, but it amazes me the passion Aussies overseas seem to have have for the yeast extract (as well as for tam-tams.)

It's the age old problem of 'you always want what you can't have.' I see the same thing happen with Americans and Peanut Butter products.

I don't think it's an Aussie o/s thing, but rather an Aussies in general thing. I have never been in an Australian household that does not have Vegemite in the pantry, whether their home is in Australia, or outside.

My 5 year old Aussie (not to mention her father  ) would have a cadenza if our pantry is ever without Vegemite and peanut butter. They are her staple sandwich toppings, so I try to oblige. (Lucky for me, she is yet to learn the difference between Vegemite, Marmite & Bovril, so at least I can get subs from Sth Africa, U.K or Aus).

I used to give my daughter marmite as vegemite has preservatives- BUT the vegemite tubes are easy to transport
I actually just had some toast with vegemite- i have not been feeling well and this seems okay to eat

Oh and it is Tim Tams not Tam tams LOLOLOL

My husband and I are travelling around the world in 10 short weeks and one of the first things we have planned on taking is the vegemite. No Aussie can live without it. Even when we went to Canada last year, our Canadian mates bought us some to make us feel at home. It cost them 9CAD for a tiny jar!!! LOL So, when we make our way to South America via Santiago, we will be packing the Vegemite too. :D

OK, after all this raving I need to find out for myself what is so great about the stuff. Just ordered a couple jars from Amazon (US) and looking forward to giving it the taste test.

Don't spread it like peanut butter - a thin layer on hot toast or crackers is the best way to try it, enjoy :)
