I have to do this every few months it seems, because I still run in to a great number of people that do it and end up paying thousands of dollars exta once the shipment hits the docks in Chile.
If you hire a company to ship to Chile from outside Chile door to door, they will not know that they are being LIED TO by the company they hire in Chile. Get in writing that they will cover any other cost.
We still have not seen a single shipping company go door to door to Chile without problems and hidden cost. Make the company you hire outside the country reimburse you for any "surprise" charges that the final company in Chile might tact on or any surprise expenses that you might incur because the company in Chile messes up the shipment.
Here are two recent examples:
Company outside of Chile ships, promises door to door, and the Chilean company demands better than $3,000 before they will make the final delivery. The reason given was the boat was early, and the company in Chile had to store the stuff for a few days; yet, they also added on charges for moving the container, labor, and so on. Things that nothing to do with storage fees, and cost that would have been incurred regardless of when the container arrived.
Another one.
Client ships door to door in Chile, the contractor in Chile takes it out of the container at customs and then puts the entire shipment on an airplane to fly it to the other end of Chile. We are talking very big heavy stuff like rafts and other equipment for a lodge in the Patagonia. The flight coast more than all the other shipping charges combined at around $5,000+.
Both are cases of companies outside of Chile not knowing what happens once things hit the docks in Chile. I do not care how big or how wide their reputation for shipping around the World might be, there is a high probability that their contractors locally will screw it up. Make the company you contract outside the country pay for all those extra cost.
Those where just the easy ones to sort out.
