I'm waiting for the follow-up advertisement of vineyards for sale; the pictures are generally very pretty.

I wonder how common Muscatine grapes are in Chile.

i used to own a vineyard. it was a lot of work. not very romantic after the first two years. i learned that the packer/processor makes a lot of the money and the farmer does a lot of the work. of course the entry cost into farming is high but not as high as in packing/processing, hence the profit margin is not as great. takes money to make money. being a farmer is great if you want to buy yourself a job (as we used to say)

yea, we have some relatives with some idle land in Isla de maipo, and I have been thinking about starting a small vineyard. Just a hobby vineyard with like 5 -10 hectares.

I have no intention to do it for money. We have client that own vineyards, and unless you have at least 100 hectares you are not even in the game financially.

One of the dirty secrets of Chilean wine is that most of the major producers buy their grapes from small growers in the 50 hectare and under range. That fine bottle of Chilean wine you open in 2007 and 2008 might have completely different plants as their source. Well, at least the large super mass produced wine. Any wine in Chile under about 10,000 pesos and commonly found at the grocery store is mostly likely produced that way.

I can attest to that one. Having been in the Chilean wine biz for nearly 5 years I can tell you and what goes in what bottles and you are right. Most of the small vineyards supply the high end wines for the big guys and the medium sized vineyards contribute to the bulk blending for the big name brands.
Some of those smaller vineyards finally caught on and are exporting their own brands of which I am importing now to the US and they are the best I have ever had from Chile, more so than the big names.

well, what keeps Chilean wine afloat is that even the crappiest grapes often beat the best vineyards in other parts of the World. Lots and lots of cheap good wine.

That is true as well. We sell some 3L box wine from Chile that is fantastic here in the US but you cant touch it with a pole in terms of quality, it would b double the price.

If you are looking for a good unknown in Chile try Vina Lagar de Bezana. They have a cab and blend that won big points with Robert Parker, the ultimate wine snob but they have a Syrah that is the best Chilean wine I have ever had. I know they sell them in some boutique shops in Santiago as well.

I can give you more tips if you'd like on the up and coming vineyards.
