Yea, sounds like you have a bigger issue with the curry paste. You likely will not be able to get that past SAG (agricultural inspectors).

Your wife does not need a birth certificate. Kids needs birth certificates (to prove they are your kids), but not adults. Just bring your passport(s).

For immigration the basics are:
1.Marriage license needs to be legalized.

2.Major periodic income needs to be legalized.

3. kids birth certificates need to be legalized.

Now that said, immigration has been coming back after the fact and asking for other things to be legalized or more documents submitted. It is kind of unpredictable exactly what they will be, if at all. There is not rhyme or reason to it, as immigration is simply trying to cover their political rears for not doing their job for the last few years.

We have had them come back and ask for incorporation documents to be legalized, but only a couple of times. Chilean Immigration does not understand that any idiot with 5 mins, $200, and an Internet connection can open a corporation in Delaware or similar and it means absolutely nothing. It could be someone's boat or it could be Microsoft. More work often goes in to legalizing the corporate documents many times, than went in to incorporating.

Thanks for the advice. I will order two sets of certified formation documents (in addition to the Status/existence report that I now have) tomorrow. It is really easy to do it at this point compared to later!

Specific question on legalization:

I plan to come to Chile in fall of 2010. Tourist visa, find rental outside of Pucon for 6 month agreement, check out work possiblities (part time, living on small retirement), then apply for temporary residential visa.

I lived in Chile from 2002 to 2007 with certificado de permanencia definitiva. I still have document and a valid RUN. Also I have Chilean tax stubs for 3 years. I was born in USA and am a citizen of Canada.

Since the office I will be dealing with is in your backyard of Tamuco and since the legalization issue strains my brain, I am hoping you will say, "No te preocupes, se feliz con las termas y los lagos."

Sorry, you will have to apply again. That said, as you had it once before it should be relatively easy to get approved.

thanks for replying in the midst of serious problems in chile.

i knew i had to apply again. when i ran into the legalization discussion, i thought i might need to deal with legalization of my documents. i assume that your reply means that my route is fairly simple and i do not have to concern myself with the issue of legalization.

thanks again,

mike

hopefully they should still have your documents in the system. I would apply, and then see what list of documents they come back with for you to get. For example, they ask you to update an income statement or something.

If the spouse is not going to request residency as a dependent, then likly not. Still, in the event they did for some reason ask for it at immigration (sometimes they come up with strange request), good to have it handy.

Charles,
Is there an expiration date that is applied to the legalization of documents? Good for six months or more?
Sorry for my thick head !!! :?

No not normally, but I guess if it was a time sensitive document intrinsically there might be.

Hi,
We are in the process of applying for legal status in Chile for our NGO; our documents bear the signature of the Secretary of State (California); however, the Chilean consulate is adamant about getting the County Clerk's signature. They have absolutely nothing to do with this. Any suggestions how we can overrride this?

thanks!

yea, legalizing docs for an NGO in Chile is a whole different animal from residency.

The quick suggestion is to try the consulate when someone else is working (perhaps around the 18th, when everyone is in a good mood).

Never have we been asked for a sig from a country clerk from any consulate in the U.S., including all of them in California. That said, it might have something to do with what you are legalizing.
