Motorcycle Prices in Chile

Postby klrbilly » Thu Jan 22, 2009 2:38 pm

Hello,
I have been looking at the KTM Dealership website in Santiago...A new 990 Adventurer is listed at USD 21.770
Which is about £16,750 GBP.. Here in the UK the same bike can be bought for about £9,000 GBP.. I expected the prices to be higher in Chile but nearly double seem,s a bit OTT.....Why is price so much more and what,s it like to ship a bike into Chile????
Thanks in advance........

And where can you test your sewing-machine online?.. :?:

I believe that many forum members have sewing machines. However, there is no thread where we all would be allowed for organizing and testing our sewing machines and equipment..

So, I'm trying to do it here. Please correct me if I'm wrong, and this topic is the wrong place. However, if not, then everybody please test your sewing machines here.....

I think most Chileans by the super cheap Chinese jumbo motorcycles that sell for around 500,000 pesos to about a million peso, and you just throw them in your shopping cart with the milk and wine. I do see some Harley Davidson's around. Seems every neighborhood I have lived in Chile there is a guy with one that drives it around the block on sunday at 10mph, then spend 30 mins revving the engine, just to be parked again for another week.

Chile has no manufacturing base for the bigger names. There is only 15 million people. How many are in to motorcycles do you think, out of say the 10% of the population that can really afford them? It would be like opening a factory in every town in the United States that had a population of say 1 million people or more, just to sell the motorcycle.

My new sewing machine is better than any motorbike!.. Much better. And now I can sew everything together. Absolutely everything. I can sew Porotos Granados and French Cheese together. I can easily sew two or three Dogs together. I can even sew 5 tinfoil hats together in 5 minutes.. I am so happy. :)

That is just the way it is.
Particularly for high end bikes like KTM, BMW, Ducati, Moto Guzzi etc.

Prices for Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha are a little more reasonable.

You cant buy a bike outside, bring it in and register it in Chile. You can only ship it in with a temporary permit, registered outside.

If you plan a lot of travelling probably cheaper to buy a used bike here and resell it.

Search the classifieds in http://www.emol.com or http://www.deremate.cl

HI klr,
I own a klr :D
Just want to say that I think you are asking this question in the wrong forum.
Try the regional section of this site http://www.advrider.com/forums/index.php
or this site http://www.horizonsunlimited.com

You will find info on bike prices and possibilly pick up a bike from a fellow traveller cheap. Good luck and keep the shiny side up

PS. yes moto's are very expensive in Chile and as for the Chineese moto's, you get what you pay for.

What is the official position on 'choppers' in Chile? I mean home-brew motorcycles or scooters, not really the $$$ big bikes. When I was a kid, we put lawnmower engines on frames and had a blast.

As other posters noted you can't bring used bikes to Chile except on temporary import, and you can't do consecutive temporary imports. You can import a zero Km bike but you will pay dearly on import duty (will probably have to pay the 19 percent IVA)

All KTMs run through Roland Spaarwater and he establishes pricing. Find another brand. Honda has decent parts support around the country. KTMs are not that reliable anyway, as we have seen from renting them for clients on guided rides. We use KLR650 bikes now for rentals and get support parts from Argentina and the US.

Chile requires annual technical inspection and so lights, turn signals, emissions, etc., have to pass. Home-made bikes are not seen much and would probably not qualify for on-street use.
