Re: Dogs

Anybody have experience taking their dog back to the United States? It seems pretty straightforward, much like the process of bringing them here. My airline requires a general health certificate issued by a licensed vet in Chile issued within 7 days of the flight and stamped by SAG. I do have copies of all his vaccinations records from the U.S., etc. It seems all that is required for entry into the US is his proof of rabies vaccination. I have a booklet issued by SAG with all locations and phone numbers listed and the boyfriend will be making a call, but I find without fail, he will not ask the questions I want or need him to ask.
Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I plan on returning home in September for 6 months or so to work and am planning on taking the dog with me.
And before anyone comments negatively to this plan; I realize traveling is stressful for pets, but he handled the whole trip here with such aplomb, I am not worried about that. And although the plan is to return March, if for some unforseen reason, I don't or can't, I am not leaving the dog behind.

yea, I will second that there is NO microchip required for your animals in Chile. We have about half dozen dogs and cats a year that we have to handle coordinating the import for our clients, and never has anyone asked for one or have we ever seen a regulation related to a microchip. It would be just plain silly, as no one in the country including SAG as far as I know has a chip reader.

That would have been a disaster when we where helping coordinate the Futa evacuation, if that was a requirement for all those animals to be moved through Argentina and back in to Chile during the Chaiten volcano eruption. There where no vets in the area to give shot and papers, let alone provide chip implants to the dozens of pets and hundreds of farm animals being moved out. Sticking chips in the animals was the last thing on anyone's mind, including the SAG officials we where dealing with.

Be prepaired that your dogs are well vacinated etc as there are thousands of street dogs in Santiago as in most places in chile, while they are very friendly they carry large amounts of unwanted things for your pets so ensure you have your loved ones in a secure controlled area...letting them run free for a pee at night is not a good idea

Everything was aligned for Kizzy, my Scottish Terrier, to finally come to Chile. Health certificate, check. USDA stamp, check. Groomed for trip, check. Pet carrier rigged, check. AA/LAN checklist, check. Transport to Dallas airport, check. Weather within limits for pet travel, check. Within 10 day window, check. Start 24 hour countdown, check.

Then...volcano ash in Santiago. What volcano ash?! Volcanoes weren't on any of the forms or checklists! There was no stamp or certificate for volcano ash! I didn't see one damn place on anything that mentioned f'n volcanoes. All flights from Dallas to Santiago embargoed until further notice.

I miss my kids, but I talk to them everyday. Kizzy and I haven't spoken for over 6 months! I hope she remembers me.
