Hurrah, hurrah, :D :D :D

My wife Mary and I have finally arrived in Chile to live under our Temporary Residence Visas. We arrived at Santiago Airport on Good Friday and, upon clearing Immigration and Customs without a hitch, took a LAN shuttle bus to Vina where we immediately moved into our new home in a new high-rise apartment building close to the Marina Arauco Mall.

We are delighted to be in Chile and look forward to a rewarding retirement life in Vina. So far, so good ... VTR phone/internet/TV installed. Also, our household goods (shipped by boat from Long Beach, CA to Valparaiso on March 1st) that had been in storage in Santiago were delivered to our apartment unit this past Wednesday ... I'm happy to report that all items were accounted for with no damage/loss to any of the contents. :o

I'm impressed! Would you be so kind as to tell us who your shipper was, and whether you packed your belongings yourself?

Thanks!

RWS,

The moving company we used is TNT Moving of Long Beach, California - recommended to us by The Chilean Consulate in Los Angeles. TNT Moving provided the packaging materials but we packed the boxes ourselves. Our household goods consisted of 50 cardboard boxes, of various sizes, filled with clothing, personal effects, and books ... ours was a relatively simple move in that no furniture was involved. TNT's particulars are as follows:

TNT Moving
1345 Seabright Ave.
Long Beach, California 90813

Phone: (562) 951-3337
Fax: (562) 951-3345
TNTMoving@aol.com
Owner: Charles 'Tito' Paoa (Chileno)

Hope this helps!

It does, thanks. I've many more than fifty boxes, though little furniture, and am at the opposite end of the country; but now I know to ask the nearest Chilean consulate and also can call TNT for referrals.

Room for rent in Bellas Artes/Lastarria

Postby nicojah » Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:52 pm

I and another American live here in Santiago, We live in Bellas Artes (by far and away, Santiago's best neighborhood) and we have a room open and would like to find a new renter. Its a spacious room in our third floor apartment on a very serene street near the Lastarria area in Bellas Artes. We are both mountain enthusiasts and love hiking, camping, climbing, and skiing. We prefer a female renter that speaks English and/or Spanish but we are open to ALL who are interested in renting the room. If you want to see the room, call me on my cell phone at: 68450026 or office phone: 02-6392809

the room is available as of NOW and was just re-painted the other day. It looks spectacular!!!!
Rent: 140,000 pesos includes all bills.

We have a part time dog that lives at the house, so you must be a canine lover.

You can search the other forum for the used car prices.....it all depends on far you want go in that car.....$1,000 USD will not get you very much in Santiago in the used car market. You will need to be patient and religeously check the paper on sunday mornings looking for that person that is in a bind and needs the money. When you do spot one, act fast cause you can bet your sweet ass they are already receiving calls about it early that morning. I will do a search in Orsorno for you and tell you the price difference and what you can expect.

Yea, Osorno is a relatively cheap place to live in Southern Chile, but like everything depends on how rich you want to live. There is no IT industry worth speaking of in the area. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Southern Chile.

I would say forget about buying a car in Chile for $1,000. Well, at least anything that has a chance of running ever. You are not even in the game for less than
$2500 - $4,000 US for a running vehicle that will keep on running more than week.

That said, public transportation in the area is really good. We have a property about 30 mins away past inter lagos, and we can take a bus from Osorno easily. We have even grabbed a taxi to drive us up there a couple of times from the turbus station in the city. The city itself is really small. You can walk around most of it fairly easily, and there are colectivos everywhere.
