Cashing in a US check in Chile

Postby DiegoQuintana » Sat Dec 13, 2008 8:13 pm

Hello everyone.

My name is Diego Quintana and I'm a Chilean graphic designer, living in Chile.

Recently I received a payment via check from the US. A Washington Mutual check.

Thing is I don't know how to cash it in.

Any ideas?. Maybe recommendations of how to transfer money in the future?-

Thanks in advance.

The guys at AFEX {www .afex .cl} cash U.S. checks, that are payable to a person (not a company). And a couple of other similar services will do, I believe. Your chilean bank may also help. If not, they should give you an advice, at least.

Hey Vicki, isn't your banker the same guy who runs the post office and a half of dozen other jobs? ;)

Hhhmmm, actually, I think he (the bank teller) is the local proctologist. The baker is still baking, but fired from his postal job, and now the bus ticket lady does the post office. To buy chicken I go to one place, and I can also purchase beer there, but If I want hamburger, I have to go to another place, and there I can also get other beef products, but only when the red flag is flying from a bamboo pole. In all fairness, if I want money, I can actually go to the one and only bank in town, where although frustrating, it is frustrating with kindness and a smile :D .

The only luck I have had was with tax refund checks issued by the US government. Banks or casas de cambio would change them for a commission. In the case of other checks I could not find anyone to accept them. I had to mail them back to the US for deposit into my account. I finally have trained my parents that if they want to send me money for my birthday, it is better to send a check directly to my account in the US than to send it to me when I just have to send it back to the US anyways.

I work for a company based in the US that also pays directly into my US acct via wire transfer. A while bacck they hired Chilean guy to do a project for them. He asked to be sent a check to avoid wire transfer charges. He also had problems cashing the check and the company got in touch with me to see if I had any suggestions about how he could cash the check. In the end I don't know what happened, but I think anything other than a US government check is going to be tough.
