If you're interested in Northern Chile, you might be overlooking a good connection with the Big Island. Have a look at the jobs page at the Gemini Observatory, based in Hilo and La Serena. Positions show up now and then for people who aren't engineers or scientists (eg. you mentioned air travel), so keep an eye out if you think it might be promising. Speaking Spanish well would certainly help (but the majority of work is in English).
