Moving September 2009

Postby goingtochile » Sat Oct 25, 2008 2:24 pm

I want to thank all of you that post. This has been more helpful then any book I have bought :!:
We are moving in September 2009 with our 2 kids and their teacher. Although we are bringing her along we want the kids to go to the public school and emerse themselves in the culture and language. Of course make some friends and play some sports. Does anyone know if I can enroll them in a local school as a tourist while we wait for our change of status :?:  and a question my son wants me to ask....is there American Football in Chile :?: :alien:

Yes. I have researched extensively (there is actually a topic on the forum if you search). Sunday night and Monday night football are on regular cable here. DirecTV Latin America also sells NFL Sunday ticket. Finally, what I've been doing to tide myself over until I get an apartment is buying all the games online in HD from nfl.com for $25/weekend. They also offer follow your team for $180 or all games for $240 as a season pass. The only downside is that if you have a fantasy team (I have yahoo) stattracker is about 45 seconds ahead of the streaming video.

We are starting with Santiago not sure where. We will stay at a hotel while we figure it out. Are you already there? We are moving from San Diego Looking forward to a change of energy. I speak fluent Spanish but the kids and my husband do not! So off we go to make sure they all learn it :salut:

No, but i will be going in aqbout 10 days for vacation, we are building with family , in the south, but I was born in Chile. I can't find any football and certainly not in the public school, they do play Rugby at the American school, Nido de Aguilas in Santiago. Otherwise it is Soccer. I would investigate the public schools carefully before deciding to put my kids there, especially in Santiago. Search for forum member Putenio, he is involved in his local small town public school and it seems to be working great. He has also taught in Chile, he will be a good resource. How old are your kids.

Great to know about the Rugby! There is team starting up here maybe we should get him involved to see what he thinks. He is very bummed that he will not play football next year! He is the starting wide receiver for his team. He is actually very good! The kids are 13 and 14 boy and girl. Girl is very excited unlike the boy. Thanks for the tip on the public school. Do you know if they can attend without being a resident?

I'm sure the school is full of transient students as well as residents. Admission requirements don' t list residency as a requirement.

there are other good schools to explore but with a quick search that is where I found Rugby. My cousin and his wife both taught there (an d are both graduates also) and she still does but he is now a principal at Santiago college another excellent private school.

Isn't El Nido atrociously expensive?

Here on the coast some schools such as MacKay (mackay.cl) practice rugby.
