I remember , years ago in a restaurant in Bolivia, asking for "Un vaso de agua" . I was met with strange looks but they were accommodating and brought me a Vase of water, the correct word there was "Copa de agua".

Hi. Search for "isapre" on this forum and you should find a couple threads about health insurance. One of the reasons life here is cheaper than in the US for the self-employed and other people who don't have a big organization paying most of their coverage.

Hi, and any thanks for your post. Per your advice, I've done a search for "isapre" on this forum and have found a couple of threads to follow up on. My wife and I would be very happy if we could get a 12 month medical/dental insurance policy covering both of us for less than US$1000.

Saludos!

One thing that the medical insurance companies are able to exclude are policies for people over certain age. Typically I believe it is around 65.

Banmedica will do 12 month contracts for foreigners without residency if you pay for the 12 months in advance. Once you have residency, then you can switch to normal payment. Around $1000 US should get you some sort of medical policy. Depends mostly on how many bells and whistles you want.

Catastrophic insurance is mandatory on all insurance policies in Chile, and underwritten by the government, with a cap.

Thank you for this additional information re: medical/dental insurance policy. I will attempt to contact Banmedica to enquire about obtaining coverage for my wife and me. However, does your comment about Insurance companies not being required to accept people over 65 mean that I may not be able to buy a policy at any price?

Saludos!
