I am guessing that the owner wanted a certain look to the building but neither he nor the maestro knew how to pull that off with the materials commonly associated with that look. So they took what they knew how to do and made it work. Problem is that the moisture in the mortar is going to rot the siding from the inside.
Either that or someone got to him and convinced him masonry is safer in Chile due to the earthquakes. Which it’s not.
