Musical newbie.

Postby Jota » Sun Sep 14, 2008 5:25 pm

Hey all. Just thought I would say, "hola." Im a 25 yr old Canadian who will be moving to Santiago de Chile at the start of the new year, 2009. Reading these posts in the forum have been very helpful, so I thought I would join the community. I learned most of the spanish that I know while living in Spain, and saying that I am excited to discover Chile and South America is an understatement.
I am a singer/songwriter and I would really like to hear more about the music scene in Santiago. Are there any professional/ semi professional musicians who use this posting board? I am interested in learning about "gigging" in Santiago and even more interested in meeting like-minded musicians to form a group once I am there.
Celebration.

Hi Jay

Live music is really popular in Santiago, particularly the Bellavista area, where most bars seem to have a live band playing at the weekend, normally something bluesy. I have to confess, im not musical myself and have no idea about gigging here, but i've been really suprised/impressed with the quality of live music here

Have Fun

Hi Jay,

Where did you live in Spain? I lived in Valencia, Spain for 9 months (study abroad) and traveled the whole country while there. I'm slightly nervous about the language differences and accents in Chile, are you? When will you be arriving/leaving? Anyway, my brother and I will be living in Viña del Mar, just 2 hours away from Santiago and so I thought I'd day hi. My brother is a musician and will be volunteering at an art and music school in Viña. What type of music are you into? He was trained in classical guitar but plays everything from John Mayer to Led Zeppelin. He also writes tons of his own music. If you ever come to Viña or when we go to Santiago we should get you guys together. I know he is going to be missing his jam sessions while we are there.

Im always up for jamming too. I cant narrow my repertoire down to any specific genre because I love it all....Lately I have been learning a bunch of songs by Los Tres. but apart from that I like to say that I can play a bit of everything. I also write my own songs.
As for Spain, I lived in Alicante for a year and travelled around Spain quite a bit. I went to las fallas in Valencia....were you there for that crazy party?
Unfortunately, I will not be in Santiago until after Christmas, probably around the start of January and then staying til the following Xmas.
viva la musica!
