Px, I immediately thought of our stop at Balboa Island on Monday on our way back from L.A. So the odd looks received were not due to the white shoes - it being Labor Day and all...


If you know the Island then you might have taken the ferry to Balboa Peninsula. I lived there for a time, on East Bay, on the narrow strip between the ocean and the bay. I briefly taught Spanish at a private school there. How long ago: Che Guevara was still alive, and I was paying US$50 a month for a ratty little cottage, and that included all the utilities. There were still rattlesnakes and jackrabbits on the UCI campus.

This is what the Peninsula (and the Pavilion) was like in those days. Nothing to do with Chile.
