Indian Food - Santiago

Postby Chilelivin on Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:28 pm

For any indian food lovers in Santiago.

We usually go down to Majestics in centro, but we found a new indian food restaurant that was really great and authentic. We met the owner that speaks english extremely well (fluent for sure) as well as spanish, of course. Anyway, it is closer to us here in Los Condes, so I thought I would send a shout out in case anyone else is around here.

It is on Vitacura before Vespucio across from the Lider Express - Soul of India. Vitacura 4111, phone 2282825, nice decor, great food and good customer service. Reasonable prices compared to Majestic too. I am sold!

Thanks,
The only reason I have to return to Great Briton would be the Indian food. I will try your place next trip. Maybe I can cross that craving off my list. Though between hubby and myself we can turn out a mean Indian repast and never use (dreaded) curry powder once.

I did have the best Chinese food imaginable in Copiapo, go figure!

During my last trip in June, I had to drive with my buddy to Talcahuana from Santiago. Almost immediately we started to see dead dogs in the road. By the time we got to Concepcion, we had seen big ones, small ones, flat ones (and some that looked like they could just get up and run off), in all, about 11. My Chilean buddy speculated early on that we must be following a truck destined for a Chinese restaurant in Concepcion, "the tailgate must be down" he says. We actually had dinner later on at a Chinese place in the central plaza too, hardy souls.

I ate Chinese seafood in Copiapo! And, about the dogs,I hear, they only use little white ones.

Thanks Chilelivin, we took your recommendation a while ago and really enjoyed Soul of India. We told the owner (lovely guy, Singaporean Indian) we were not Chilean and he made the food extra spicy for us. It was delicious!

We're going there again tomorrow night, which is why I revived this thread; I was looking for their phone number...

Thanks for the info. everyone, that's great news :-). I'll try to find it when I'm next down there.

Even better! The Majestic's not bad, but they don't always believe you when you say you want it hot.

Couldn't wait, so went last night (I'm pregnant, so there's no stopping me once a food craving enters). Had the Ginga Punjabi (spicy prawns/shrimp) and asked for it extra hot, which was great. Also had Lamb Rogan Josh which, although the flavour was fantastic, the meat was really tough and chewy (very unlike the usual texture in Indian restaurants) and disappointing.

I will go back though, the restaurant is beautiful with a nice lively atmosphere (if you don't go too early).

Now if I can only find good Thai in Santiago...

The Majestic use to be the best in Santiago, but some Chileans bought it and removed all the flavor from the food

That would be very funny if it wasn't so sad.

I am absolutely serious. About 5 or 6 years ago they got bought out by a Chilean company with Chilean cooks and managers and they neutralized the flavors. I am sure it is good for their bottom line, but not if you like spicy Indian food. I remember taking Chileans there about 6 years ago, and they had trouble eating the food because of how spicy it was. So, I kind of understand.

Yeah, not to the local palate... I have been known to inflict this stuff on visitors at the odd barbecue (most of them find it a life-changing experience and still talk to me  ):

Hmmm . . . . Does this --

angelinadavid84 wrote:Having Indian food in Santiago is awesome every one likes to have like that in different places they taste their Indian food,,,

-- mean, "I'm glad that Indian food is available in Santiago, because we all like to have Indian food wherever we are", or, "It's good to have Indian food in Santiago and everyone enjoys having a variety of sellers of it in Santiago", or something altogether different?

I'm a native speaker, well-practiced in interpreting the speech of non-natives, but this confuses me. I'm minded of another current thread in the forum . . . .

Here is a list of Indian Restaurants in Santiago.....(Ordered by preference)

Majestic (http://www. majestic .cl)
Rishtedaar (http://www. rishtedar .com)
Soul of India (http://www. soulofindia .cl)
Salam Bombay
Delhi Darbaar(http://www. delhidarbar .cl/)
Pasaje a la India (http://www. pasajeaindia .cl)

Regards,
Guddu

I am intrigued by the manner in which the topic was spoilt by the mention (Not even remotely related at that) of Dead Dogs and Chinese foods...........Hope that Sanity prevails....

I ate Indian food only once and I didn't like it very much because I thought it was too spicy and it had a strange taste. Besides, the restaurant we went to was too expensive for the little plate of food that we got.
