Are you a translator?

Postby love_chile » Thu Jun 05, 2008 9:08 pm

Hi everybody,

I wanted to ask if any forum members are experienced translators (either English-Spanish or Spanish-English), because I'm thinking about starting a small business in this field.

I have experience in translation and in the the business side of translation. I had thought about freelancing alone, but two or three people can accept more larger jobs than one person, and can specialize more.

I think this is a really exciting field, and despite being also rather competitive, in Chile there is a real shortage of people who translate well to English. With a little ambition, charm, some marketing skills, and real knowledge of the languages, I think it can be done! Do you?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

I've much and varied facility in my native tongue, English, but am not yet altogether fluent in Spanish -- close to it in Argentine Spanish, but not in Chilean. In a few months . . . .

If you send me a PM in February, when I anticipate moving to Chile, I'd be glad to help -- and glad of the work!

I don't mean to be rude but "More larger" is very poor English and typical of the bad translating I see out there ( Read Copa airlines inflight magazine for this kind of poor translation). A little more proficiency in English( and Spanish) would be in order before one goes into the translation business.

Dear helibel,

Thank you for pointing out my (rather embarassing) error, I changed the wording of my post several times and forgot to delete the extra word. (Fortunately I'm much more conscientious as a translator). I assure you that I am fully proficient both in English and in Spanish, though I may relax a bit when writing a forum post.

Yet, I would please ask you for a little more mercy and understanding, as I spent the day working at my (unsatisfying) job for 10 hours, in addition to having commuted over two hours and attended several meetings, and I'm trying to send out a message to possible friends and colleagues who have the same work interests that I do, are tired of what they are doing, and want a higher quality of life. Since no one is paying me for my forum posts, I suppose I don't worry greatly about the revision (perhaps I should, but hey, I am human)

Are you a translator yourself? I might remind you that all of us make mistakes occasionally.

Best regards.

I make a lot of mistakes. "He who is without sin should cast the first stone."....that does not refer to me, so I won't through any more stones!
well.... accept at ponds.

I'm a little stressed out at the moment, but when I said thank you, it was in all sincerity...a real translator always wants to improve his/her work, and you were right that it does not look very good for a translator introducing him/herself by way of ridiculous errors. :D

So, I repeat, anyone interested out there? The most important element is the desire to begin, if you have the abilities, the experience can come after!

I think I like you. Though not a professionalI have corrected Spanish to English translations, on occasions for "clarity" and "flow"( i am also a part owner of a Spanish/English magazine)

Hi,

I didn't get my B.A. in translation, but I am interested in the area. I studied castellano in Chile in 2006. I studied and received my B.A. in Latin American and Latino Studies at UC Santa Cruz.

Now, I live in Temuco. I was teaching at ICHNOC (the worst place to ever work in Chile), but I quit because it was a very unprofessional atmosphere. I have started looking into teaching English at schools in Temuco, but it's not really working out. Apparently they would rather have a Chilean professor that has a degree that says English professor, but who doesn't really know the language than a real true gringa with teaching experience (and not just at ICHNOC). It's truly sad.

Anyways, I am always interested in some work wherever that may be!!...except at any English institute!!
