funny how forum members perceptions change with only one new data point.
one thing must be kept in mind, is that people and nations rarely do anything for just one reason. often there is the public (PR) reason and a variety of real (secret) reasons. people that suspect the existence of real reasons in addition to the public reason are often ridiculed and branded as conspiracy theorists 8)

Where did that guy get the stuff about "no natural resources" I was born in an iron ore, mining camp, "El Tofo" and my mining engineer father, designed "Romeral" , near La Serena, which is still going strong, My father used to say about Chile, just scratch anywhere and you will find something to mine. They mine something like 20 different ores, besides copper, at Chuquicamata. With a little research I could go on.
I think a fantastic climate, and fertile soil , which has made Chile the fruit basket to the world could be considered a natural resource.
