That skitters on the edge of what would be legal in the United States (where few insurers would write a policy of insurance on property the policy holder doesn't own) or England. But that doesn't mean it isn't both legal and usual in Chile!

I'll be interested in reading of others' experience in this very situation, Tony.

tonyakaserg, give us a call.

Postby admin on Fri Jun 06, 2008 9:23 pm

tonyakaserg as the footer of my post says "free consultations", please give us a call.

I just had a discussion with my wife over this, and she seems to think it smells bad. Let us have a look over the contract, no strings attached. If we need to get in to all kinds of complicated drafting of contracts and such, then we can worry about fees and other gory details; but, no charge just to have a look at it and talk about it. Which from the sounds of it is likely all you need.

You can put anything you want in a contract, but that does not mean the other party should sign it.

Temuco, really is a nice town in many ways. I would hate for you get discouraged by some of the local idiosyncrasies of the area (every place on Earth seems to have them).

Re: Moving to Temuco - Update

Have almost got everything in order.. we move this weekend.. 8_0

Ok things to note.
Salvoconductos are no longer obtained from the Carabineros. They can be obtained from ANY Notaria.
Things you will need.
- a photocopy of your national I.D card and if you rent you'll also need your landlords National I.D card aslo.
- a photocopy of your last water and electricity bills
- the address of both where your leaving and where your things will go to
- the registration number of the truck, truck drivers full name and his R.U.T number.
- your last rent receipt.
- a letter from your landlord authorising your departure and stating that there are not outstanding debts
- this salvoconducto is also only good for 5 days.

has been interesting trying to get the authorisation letter from our landlord... but looks like he will give it to us tomorrow so its full steam ahead!.. all signed up in Temuco aswell.. and we have changed from Telefonica to VTR so we'll see if there is a difference!..

Oh boxes are not so readily available here.. ppl tend to collect and sell them so they can be quite scarce.. supermarkets like Lider can be quite nice and give you some.. not much but over a few weeks you can collect enough to box everything...

Not much else to report....

Tony,

Happy moving! And good luck. While they don't hold much, I've been lucky to get the wooden fruit crates for free and they stack great. Afterwards, smash them up for starter wood in a stove. If you have any markets around, they often stack them up and have no use for them. I actually used many for shelving in our rustic cabin by the river, not pretty but functional. I hope you like Temuco...nice college town, great selection of restaurants...just watch out for the packs of dogs.

My dad also owns some houses in Temuco and Santiago. He rents them thru Corredores de Propiedades too, since he doesn't have much time for looking for clients.
I told him about your opinion about those guys, and he seemed to agree... sort of. That's because while he had bad experiences in the past, he now knows better people who can be in charge in case a house has to be rented.

As for the controversial contract clause, I have yet to ask him about how he does it with his contracts, but what I read from Tonyakaserg's post doesn't seem too strange to me.

Hey... by the way, anybody interested in arranging a meeting of Allchileans living in Temuco?
Testing... testing...

yea, we will do a meeting at some point. I just have trouble finding time to get out for dinner, let alone to doing anything more involved these days.

Some point I want start organizing some meetings around the country of forum members. An allchile.net tour so we can for example have a get together once a year in say the Central Region, and a get together for the people in the south, and one for the North. It is kind of hard for a lot of people because of the distances to cordinate everyone in just one location at one time, say Vina del Mar or Santiago. So, better to split it up in to regions perhaps.

Finally in Temuco! :happyjump:

.. the move went so smooth I was actually surprised.. the removal company we hired were actually quite good and surprisingly efficient.. although they did arrive 3 hours after we did.. but kept communicating with us along the way.. which was something new to me in Chile!

VTR arrived the day and time they said they would.. service was excellent. They did however have trouble connecting the MacBook to the wireless router.. but we eventually figured out what the problem was.. what impressed me was that one of the supervisors came out to help troubleshoot this problem!.. Also the deal we got was better than Telefonica by 5mil pesos for 9 months!!..

So far we're extremely happy!.. :groupjump:

Tony, glad to hear that you made it to Temuco ok. Removal company means a moving company?

That's good to hear about your VTR installation. When the Telephonica guy arrived back in Jan to install the DSL, he arrived 6 hours later than he was suppose to come and didn't finish until 10pm. Some of the time he spent trying to find where the line came into the house. Plus days later, I found out that he actually cut some of the existing jack connections in the house, for no good reason. Since I only asked for one outlet, that's what they did. :x

For the benefit of other Mac users switching to or signing up with VTR, what exactly was the problem?

Also, anyone else notice the cable connectors on the VTR run cable are non-standard - not RG59 or RG 6 - a tiny bit larger?

Tony did you ever get your deposit returned from the apartment landlord? I was a bit dismayed to see you paid two months rent for a deposit, I hope you got it back.

Ok.. firstly I have no idea about how to explain this in the correct terms.. but in simple terms... The problem was that the wep password needs to be a WEP 40/128-bit hex as the WEP Password was not being accepted by the MacBook and kept coming up with "error in joining network" message.. they mesed around with the channel (changed from 11 to 6) and all sorts.. hope that all the changing does not affect any future WiFi connections.. :?

Yes!!.. surprsingly enough I got almost all of it back.. he did keep some but thats supposedly to pay the water and electricity bills for last months usage.. I was shocked to actually get any of it back so I will not be chasing him up for the change...
