Aaaah Ha! I see what you're doing RWS!!!!!!!!!!!! Trying to goad me into going off-topic into a wild, political mosh pit! Alright, just kidding. Actually, I was referring to hurricanes, flooding, tornados, and then if you must, yes, man-made disasters. But...as always, back to the subject...Re: VOLCANO ERUPTS IN PATAGONIA, CHAITEN / FUTA EFFECTED....

It is amazing to me that a "doomsday-Armagedon" email has been circulating in Futa, printed out and being read with raised eyebrows and concern. I don't have the entire grasp of the email, but it concerns Chile and China's recent disasters being related, and end-of-the-world scenerios. I was sent the email by a Chilean friend here in Futa, and upon visiting a small store-front to buy potatoes, found the owner rubbing her brow and pointing wildly at a paragraph that appears to talk about the seven horsemen, something like that. A bit of panic might be explained with recent reports of another impending eruption.

Tonight was blessed with a beating rain mixed with big slobbers of snow. Within an hour, beautiful icicles froze off the eaves of the roof, and I busted my a** walking out to get some wood. Ah....nothing like a little ice under the boots and the fast approaching ground rising up to your butt to remind you - you ain't as young as you used to be!

Current temp: 1 C.

I am not well-read when it comes to the Christian scriptures, but isn't the seven horsemen reference from the Biblical apocalypse story?

From John's Revelation, yes.

Do I remember correctly that you've an interest in histoy, JAL? The Bible in both testaments is a cornerstone of Western history over the past millenium and a half. If you've already read the Old Testament, you'll find the New more easily understood -- and it's only half as long. Christian, Jew, pagan, or agnostic, it's worth the score of hours needed to go through it.

Martin's right: four horsemen, seven churches in (the Roman province of) Asia, etc. An acquaintance with Biblical references and imagery helps not only with understanding Western literature and history, but also with sifting the plausibly concerned from the merely hysterical! Of course, for some us, the relevance of the Bible is both greater and more intimate.

Ahh, yes. Just to pander to my curiosity, the number seven does play a significant role throughout the Bible, correct?

I haven't an imterest in history as such. I do, however, have a strong interest in economic, political, and religious philosophy. Unfortunately, I never have been able to delve into these topics with the depth that I would like to.

I do agree with your comments concerning the importance of the Bible to recent Western history. I find the scriptures of all major religions interesting and would enjoy studying them all someday.

But shouldn't they resemble the four we've already got? I mean, like, we've got, like, war, and, famine. So, shouldn't we, like, get AIDS and destruction? Like, y'know wad I mean, like, like?

It's worthwhile. I'm no Moslem but profitted by reading a translation of the Koran; and I doubt that I'd have much comprehension of the Near and Middle East without having done so.

Yes. Numerology is more apparent throughout the Old Testament, but it does appear in the New, too -- and especially in the Revelation to John, John's Apocalypse.

Hey! You guys are just plain GOOFY! As for the recent rumblings of Sr. Chaiten, Dr. Ralph Harrington of the Volcanism Blog, reports this:

ONEMI reported late yesterday that the Intendencia Regional of Los Lagos - i.e. the regional government executive - is seeking powers from the courts to remove the last few inhabitants of Chaitén town who are refusing to leave. The number of people involved is given by ONEMI as seven; La Segunda and Radio Cooperativa both report that the number is five, a married couple and their son and two neighbours (and name those concerned) - but last Friday the latter source said that the number was six, until five of them decided to evacuate after all, leaving only one person who was ‘in a state of inebriation’.

UPDATE: This afternoon the Corte de Apelaciones confirmed the Intendencia Regional in the power it was seeking. The effect is that from now on, no-one will be permitted to stay in Chaitén overnight (source: El Mercurio).

And I'm just sayin...if you are gonna hang out in a hot zone like that, it's a great idea to be ‘in a state of inebriation’. Which came first, the chicken, or the eggnog?

Vicki

ps...no Sr. P and RWS, I don't want any painted horses. I can have a little chicha and dance around naked in front of a mirror and get the same effect. OK, now I need some coffee.
