It looks like Chaiten is fairly well cut off. They can not drive out, fly out, and they do not have sufficient navy vessels on scean yet to evacuate the town. We hear that more are on their way.

They are considering at this point evacuating Chaiten to Futa. They are sending heavy machinery by boat to help with opening the roads.

Vicky,
Hope ur taking all the health and safety precautions such as wearing a mask so u don't breath in toxic particles causing respiratory problems later on.. also look after your eyes and these particles can also irritate them.. stay in doors as much as possible.. and avoid driving anywhere if visibility is bad and i would imagine roads may be slippery.. stay safe..

Hey Tony,

Thanks. We are staying inside. Looking out the window, it looks beautiful, like a first soft snowfall. Futa is calm, and quiet. It doesn't appear they are evacuating...where the hell would they evacuate us too? And how? Anyway, all is fine so far, except I don't have enough beer to last for a few days.

Just bundled up and went for some "supplies". There are some people out looking around, the hospital is giving away masks, but other than that, no panic. Just grave, grave concerns about the animals. People are almost in tears about it. The meat market is waiting for several animals to butcher this afternoon, don't know if it's because of this situation, or if they were already expecting them.

Spoke to an official at the water department who said Chaiten was evacuated to Puerto Montt. Keep in mind, my Spanish is awful, so he might have said they were "going to" evacuate to Puerto Montt. Store are open, and shelves are full - so far.

Confianza no ma'...

I would imagine that the animals will take the brunt of all this....In la IX we lost no animals ourselves but, all our nieghbors did without exception and so they are weak, ...pobrecitos....a drought and now a shaker with cenizas....the nitrogen for the soil will be good in the long run and the rains will wash the rest into the soil with a little bit of time....this doesn't calm the panic now but you know the CHileans are never better than in times like this with all they are willing to give, so hang tight...

Also, remember that the percursor to this was Aysen and LLaima....it will come to Villarica, if God doesn't have it in the works already....gently fill your pantry so that you are ready...it will come...and remember that NOTHING solidifies the place of a forestero in CHile, in the eyes of his nieghbor, than how he "se comporta" right now....you will be remembered for your actions and behavior long after this, so...

make your mark, Vicki and Greg , this is your time to shine...if there is anything to do then make a list and let us know....

...p. out.

pm for specifics..and DON'T be shy....

We have been talking to our friends and clients in the area all afternoon trying to determine where, what, how, and so on needs to be done and how we can help. We are considering posting a pay pal button on the forum to take donations. I just got off the phone with Mitch Sasser from Aguas Libres. Mitch has offered to make the Aguas libres accounts available for donations and helping with the distribution process. Again, this is all very early, and we are trying to work out the logistics.

We have word from a rancher friend in the Campo, that is rather known as the master (kind of guy other ranchers go to for advice) in Futa. We are told that they will be needing at least some supplemental food for the animals. Remember that this is the start of the winter down there.

Another big issue at hand is the water situation. Many of the people in the campo do not have wells. What they have is water collection tanks, and the water comes from glacier fed creeks. So, many of their water supplies are either contaminated or will be once the rain starts and all the ash starts getting washed down the mountains. We hear that rain might happen around Sunday.

The big logistical hurdle right now is that the only way to get stuff in to Futa is through Argentina. Even if money was on hand, the shipping is the issue.

Normally, all shipments go through Chaiten by ferry on truck. Chaiten is completely cut off right now and limited evacuations are underway. The navy has ships on the way.

That said, something might be worked out through Argentina.

Remember, the argentines will be having the same troubles if not worse...and not just with the volcan...they will be suffering the same thing soon, if they aren't already.....chao no ma, al puro chileno no ma' maestro...

Found this quote on the AP wire:
The Chaiten volcano has "probably been dormant for about 9,000 or 10,000 years but that's not unusual," said Charles Stern, a professor of volcanology at the University of Colorado, who specializes in Andes volcanoes.

Stern, who has studied Chaiten specifically, said it is still considered "a potentially active volcano."

Chaiten last had "an explosive eruption that generated a very big ash cloud," he added. "I would really worry about the village of Chaiten. I think they would want to get everybody out of there really soon."
