A chilean going back home!

Postby Gloria on Thu May 01, 2008 11:24 am

After 38 years in the USA, this chilean finally is going home! It has been an entire year of planning, throwing numbers around, adding, dividing, hardly any at all of multiplying and lots of substracting, inquiring, wondering, asking more questions, emailing, laughing, getting aggravated, appreciating many and now thanking all of you in this forum for your answers. It has been a learning experience not available in any university and I know for a fact that this is only the begining.I have left 14 days ( and counting) before stepping on chilean soil and dogs dodoos all over Santiago.Regardless, it will be good to be home again! THANK YOU ALL!!!

Gloria,

It's been fun following your planning for this big move. I'm looking forward to hearing how it feels when the wheels of the plane hit the tarmac, and to hear of your re-acclimation as you settle in!

Welcome home!

38 years? I wonder under what circumstances I might return to my home country, and if it is even 30 years, I would be - oh - uhhhh - kinda old, if not in a coffin! Might be personal, but how did you chance to leave Chile? For us, we left the US because we wanted to travel and have adventure but not as tourists. I know you have alot on your plate right now, so if someday you have a moment to reflect, love to hear it!

Congratulations!

We too are going back to Chile (to my husband's home) after 37 years in California. It's a hectic time seeing to all the details, packing, shipping, etc. I am so looking forward to starting a new life there. We will be in the central region on the coast. Wishing you the best in your move and hope to see more posts here as to how it's going.

Thank you Chile2008, I appreciate your good wishes.Needless to say how hectic things are going on this end.The packing is done, we already built our own crates and they have been filled with our precious possessions (all 6 of them) and the pick up day is tomorrow for their shipment from New Jersey to Valparaiso. The list has been made, the flight has been reserved, the credit cards cancelled and the goodbyes in order. We got 10 more days to go, we still need to advice the post office and detour our mail and make reservations with Transvit for our pick up at the airport in Santiago ( no relatives waiting) and lastly clean up our saving accounts.WHEW!!!....am I forgetting anything??

Today the truck arrived on time to pick up our crates in road to Bayonne New Jersey.....I kissed my things goodbye hoping they'll arrive in good condition to Valparaiso. Once we get to Chile we'll be able to track'em in the internet. I'll be praying that they'll put them under the deck to keep them dry. 9 more days to go.

Hey Picky, it's awesome to hear from you! Thank you for the best wishes! So far, so good and I really hope it stays this way. In our way home after loading the truck with our crates I had the opportunity of admiring the beauty of the scenery for the last time. It's gorgeous around here this time of of the year. The fields are getting ready for planting and there is grass everywhere....it looks just like a beautiful green carpet in differents hues.....the picturesques farms and their dark red barns.......awesome!! Our home now looks HUGE!! sure.......it has no furniture at all!!! we were fortunate that we sold it all. We decided not to take any of it with us so now we have to eat standing up in the kitchen :D In the livingroom is the same situation but we managed to put a wooden "love seat" rocker so we can have something to seat on but the darn thing it's sooooooo hard that our butts gets numb when we are seated for long periods of time. Sleeping arrangements?? THE FLOOR!!and an air mattress. It's comfortable but getting out of it, it is a different matter......It looks like the commercial.......I HAVE FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET UP!!!

Wow, incredible that I did not find this thread b/4 today. Gloria I sent you an e-mail privately but wanted to post here for all. My husband who is also Chilean and is also returning to Chile after 35 yrs. in the States. I his crazy gringa wife will be moving with him, of course. What an adventure it will be for the two of us. We have been to Chile twice in the past yr. so I feel a bit acclimated, but there is more...way more that I know we both will need to acclimate to.
Thankfully Carlos has family in Chile to help ease the transition for him back in to Chilean life. And I have him and his family to assist with living outside the US for the first time in my life.
We will be in Santiago intially staying with my lovely mother-in-law. Then down to Concepcion to our see our new grandbaby for the first time. Then over to Maitencillo to check on housing, etc. My hubby's family has a little cabana there and we will stay there as we settle in. My husband is a Dr. and is hoping to start a little practice in the area. So much to do in the coming months.
I would love to meet up with some or all of you at some point. So if any of you are interested...just let me know.

Jill (y Carlos)
