A Wire Transfer from Canada to Chile

Postby Ventisquero on Mon Apr 14, 2008 7:26 pm

I may want to buy a piece of land in Central Chile some time soon. Obviously, I'll need get the money from my Canadian bank to Chile. I have permanencia definitiva and a simple savings account (cuenta de ahorro) in BancoEstado. Can I freely wire amounts over $10,000 (most likely 20,000-25,000) from my Canadian account to my Chilean account? What are possible risks? I tried to figure it out using "ejecutiva en linea" online service now offered by BancoEstado. According to them, it's absolutely hassle-free for transfers under 10,000 and I will need to supply a proof of the origin of funds (e.g. my recent Canadian monthly statement) if it's over 10,000. Do you think I can trust this info? Thanks.

I've done it several times in 2006 & 2007, amounts from $5K to $55K, to an acct. at Banco Estado and I needed to demonstrate the cartola, or bank statement, as evidence of funds, a letter from employer stateside (how long you've been employed in what position from HR on letterhead, it just goes to credibility, but they ask for it), and all the usual documentation (carnet, passport, etc). You can email these documents to your bank official - I did - then later submitted hard copies. For me, I'd have it wired from my acct. stateside or actually be stateside and then fly down, knowing full well it takes 2-3 days to hit Santiago Banco Estado, then 2-3 more to hit my branch in Puerto Montt. I walk in and "it is ready for you sir ..." I get hit with fees for it on the BancoEstado side if I recall correctly + the exchange to pesos, but it's all an easy process. My best advice is to know your bank employees who handle foreign currency at your bank - Banco Estado in Puerto Montt has two and we know both of them on a first name basis, they take English classes locally, like to practice with us, etc. The personal connection makes the bureaucracy easier but doesn't get around the paperwork. I don't know about cuenta de ahorra in terms of limits. Converting the wire to the equivalent of a cashier's check (for land purchase for example) takes no time at all. Under $10K is easy, but it seems to me more than $15K a month triggers an evaluation.

Thank you, Putenio. Just a few more questions. Did you wire $55K at once? What kind of Chilean account did you use for that (cuenta corriente, ahorro)? Also, do you think pay stubs will do as well instead of a letter from employer? Thanx!

The simple answer is NO!!

The advice to get to know the people at your local international desk is very good. We are very good buddies with everyone up and down the food chain at Banco Estado in Temuco (and a few in Santiago office above them) from problems related to clearing wires for clients. Most do go through o.k., and yes under 10,000 are mostly hassle free, but do you really want to wing it with Chilean bureaucracy and that kind of money? Best to be prepared.

In theory you are suppose to have both documentation of where the money is coming from and where the money is going. Sometimes no one even asks us for money laundering paper work on wires for as much as $200,000 US. Other times we jump through hoops for a week to clear wires under $10,000 US. It really depends on what branch, who you are dealing with, and so on. The good news they have never lost our money, just try not to be in a hurry.

With the more remote branches, schedule more hoops and problems including them not having a clue about what to do to release the funds. Small branches we often end up showing them how to clear the wire, and making the calls up the line to get the money out of the money laundering committee in Santiago. Some of them can not accept international transfers at all.

Make sure they clear it to pesos when it hits the bank, otherwise you might have a whole lot less money when it finally pops out the other side of the banking system. Also make sure they set the payment flag from the point of origin. Banco estado likes to try and collect on their end also. Seems to happen about 50% of the time we send wires. Keep your transaction info so you can prove you payed it.

One more thing. Make sure that your account is unconditional. Their is another cuenta de oro with a 500,000 peso a day withdrawal limit. Did that once with $11,000 deposit by accident, and had to go to the bank every day to get the money out to pay for a property.

Thank you. Just a few more questions - do I choose the branch I deal with, or does it have to be only and exclusively the branch I indicated when I requested the wire?

Also, how can I participate in the process of clearing the wire? I understand I just check my account to see whether the money is there. Do I have to inquire regularly? How do I know it's there if it's not reflected on the current balance? Generally, what's the BEST way to get money into Chile at all?

55K at once to cuenta corriente, BancoEstado, and I chose the branch. Good luck!
