Pokemon has Santiagans Frustrated

Postby Vicki and Greg Lansen on Sat Mar 22, 2008 1:17 pm

My mother sent me this article about Santiago's Pokemon gangs, and "ponceo". Groups of teens who get together to have oral sex in public places? And of all the things Chile has to offer, Newsweek writes about this?

Idiot USA college senior gets inaccurate unverified article printed in that great bastion of quality journalism know as Newsweak. Word gets out to the Chilean media and all hell breaks lose. War is declared. As all the troops are in the ME and cruise missile quantities need to be preserved to blow up real stuff, three missiles with experimental psyop payloads are launched on Santiago. Missiles mysteriously malfunction and contaminate the areas of Cheyenne Mountain, the greater MD/DC/VA metro area and the Omaha area. COG seizes up and fails to function. Stay tuned ...

I have to say it is awful what these kids are doing in regards to their unprotected sexual activities. Near our studios in the center of STGO we have two major parks in which these Pokemon's gather and they would embarrass people at Woodstock, I have unfortunately seen for first hand what they get up to.

They get started as early as 6:30pm on a Friday afternoon and have been known to go till the next morning. Now I don't want to sound like my parents (oops too late) but this is absolutely disgraceful and yes I do blame the parents.

I am not sure what eeuunikkeiexpat is on about about the writer of the story. She actually use to work for the Santiago Times and spent a great deal of time here in Chile. In my humble opinion It was a very well written story sticking with observations and statements of fact.

Now with that said you cant lump all of these Pokemon's in the same basket. I would say the majority do not participate these "Ponceo" and though they don't stand for anything and they don't stand against anything, I can say that the advertising media is spending millions to reach this demographic.

This group or tribe whatever you call it has one thing that advertisers love. They love DESIGN. And companies what to market to them. Everything about Pokemon's is style and design and creativity and they have created an entire new way of life on their own, from hair styles to fashion a whole new way of life. Without a doubt they have made an impact on pop culture.

As to EE.UU.'s fantasy: this could be good . . . .

As to the underlying reality: I know little about it. I do remember my first trip to La Serena, at the beginning of the century. I have no cousins in the city, so I could stay at a modest hotel without offending anyone, and did: a block or two from the plaza de armas, next to a pretty little pocket park. I was first puzzled, then surprised, and finally saddened when, returning to my room late in the evening, I found the little park full of older children -- young teenagers, I think (I certainly didn't look too closely) -- engaged in what appeared to be actual sexual intercourse in public. Laissez-faire though I am, especially as regards individual liberties, I cannot think that children should be so indulged as to be afforded the liberty of such actions.

Main big error. Ponceo is NOT ORAL SEX, it is kissing multiple people. She has defamed the poor minor girl who said she kissed seven guys not oral sexed them in the public park.

If the author lived that long in Santiago, I fail to see how mistaking oral sex with ponceo could have been done in an article appearing in the mainstream USA media. Wena Naty was an exception not the rule.

Some of the comments from Chileans after the story correct many of the misperceptions of what I would say should be very embarrassing to a publication such as Newsweek.

Well then I must have spoken to the wrong Pokemon's myself here in Santiago, where i actually live and work and the Pokemon's call their oral gratification "Ponceo" We actually covered this story and interview several people from this culture and they all said the same thing, it was more than kissing.

Yes the original meaning was kissing, but ask yourself would it be the first time that a word was taken by a culture and used in a different way then its original meaning? Lets see "Man thats BAD" "Yo thats da BOMB" "that's a KICKING car" these statements do not mean what their original definitions state. Kids today change the meanings of things to hide from their parents. Is this a new concept? Because I thought kids have been doing this for a long time. Just check out any kids text messages you will see what I mean. Words are createdwith one meaning and before you blink its a whole different meaning most people don't know except those in the group

Are you saying when I walk through the parks here and these children are engaged in these activities I am not actually seeing it, they are only kissing? Is it just me ? No I asked some my staff who also live in downtown and they said the same its most rampant in Plaza Italia. So the word has evolved it started out meaning one thing and they moved it to another. But what you are saying is that because some Chileans say it doesn't mean one thing it doesn't and thats it no room for discussion. What about the Chileans that say it does mean something more than kissing? hmmm sounds like your way or now way.

Now if you want to hit the real meat of the story about living in under the shadow of the Pinochet dictatorship I have to seriously disagree with her there. To me that was the real injustice to the story.

Thats my 2 cents ...putting on my flameproof underwear... let it rip :)

For my students that can not think, I recommend Time. For my students that can not read, I recommend Newsweek.

Yea, moral outrage has never ever, in any time in any location on the planet stopped teenagers from engaging in sex. In fact, moral outrage is the hallmark of what it is to be a teenager. We all very much might not be here if somewhere, someplace, and at sometime one of our relatives had not been a "good" teenager about it.

In some respects it is the prior generation's fault. They were shocking to a new level, and thus now they need to top that. So, what?

Any of them with guns?

I will leave it to the other Santiaguinos to comment.

So you have actually seen exposure of the below the belt area in parks and Plaza Italia or the obvious getting down on the knees type worship while thousands of natives pass by including Carabineros? Not to be crude, but where are the reams of video footage proof or is it all braggin' and braggin' rights becasue they say so?

Public heavy kissing and petting I understand as this is common in this part of the world when you have a culture of up to 30+ year olds living at home with no money or private place to go for a release.

Trying to somehow link what these kids are doing to the dictatorship was way over the top. I bet you half those kids could not list even three of the top generals or tell you what it was all about. There are lot of foreigners that seem to have this perception of Chileans walking around doing nothing but thinking and talking about the dictatorship all day.

This article is basically saying that in Santiago there is a group of teenagers being teenagers. Kind of arbitrary. In fact is smells badly of marketing campaign. The only thing the author can seem to latch on to is that these kids are defined from millions of other teens around the World by the amount of junk they buy (woops, guess that would not really differentiate them either). Good marketing and bad social science, but definitely not international news.
