Canadian Airlines are a tad more sensitive to the 1 way ticket issue then many other Airlines, as many refugees Chileans included enter Canada on one way tickets, to discourage this they demand you have a return ticket when entering Canada so they can send you home if need be, which they never do, so you end up living in a church basement like the ex-KGB guy here in Vancouver. Long and short of it since anyone entering Canada needs a return ticket they assume other countries are the same. I once bought a ticket to BA to get a ticket to Santiago from Toronto, or they would not sell me the ticket even though I had a return ticket for about 2 months later on another airline, Air Canada should go broke then we can get a real airline without all the legacy baggage Air Canada has.

I'll be traveling to Chile from LAX on a one way ticket on Wednesday, June 24th. I'm also going through Mexico City. The price was so dang cheap (298.00 us.) I couldn't resist. So, I'll post here again and let you know if they hassled me in Santiago about the one way and/or traveling via Mexico City.

You won't have any hassles in Santiago. The immigration officers at the airport in Santiago don't care if you have a one way ticket or not. They only check your passport; they won't even ask you for your tickets. Like it has been mentioned before, you will only get hassled at your departing airport buy an airline representative who is uninformed on what you are actually required to have in order to enter the country.

Just to follow up on my last post: I did fly into Chile on a one way ticket and not one Chilean agent said a word to me. They could have cared less.

Dear Chile2008:

What airline offered such a great price to Santiago ($298 USD)?! I am looking around at fares now. The only difference for me is that I would be departing from Dallas, Texas.

I flew from LAX and booked my trip online via Orbtz or Sidestep (can't remember). It was Aero Mexico (through Mexico City) and then LAN from Mexico City to Santiago. My daughter got th same price for her trip here in September.

Canadians? Yes, you will be charged a "reciprocity fee"! You can thank our US cousins for that one. It's all since Bush and Iraqi war. Canada charges Chiléan tourists, so they charge you back....thereof the reciprocity. You can sneak past the control at the airport when you enter the country BUT you need to show them your receipt in order to leave the country. No exceptions! If your passport gets stolen you face the fee over again.

Swedes don't need to pay.

Since you can't get past passport control without the stamp for the reciprocity fee, there is no way you will "sneak" past without it. You are not asked to show it when leaving the country as, if you entered Chile by land or sea or another airport other than SCL, you would not need to pay it so would have nothing to check.

Most people do not need to pay a reciprocity fee, whose value depends on the nationality of the passenger. Those who do need to pay are Canadians, US citizens, Mexicans, and Australians. Albanians used to be on the list for a very small amount but maybe they no longer charge Chileans for visas since they are not there now. No other nationality pays the fee. The fee is only charged if flying into Santiago's international airport on an international flight.

For US citizens the fee is good for the life of the passport, so yes if your passport is stolen you would need to pay a new fee on the new passport before entering Chile again, but you would not be charged the fee again when leaving. You would need to replace the copy of the tourist card you filled in on arrival (nothing to do with reciprocity fees) before departing to show when you entered the country.

This is a thread from 2009 you have revived for your first post, odd.

The payment has nothing to do with Bush, it has to do with reciprocity, Chileans pay for Canadian Visas we pay a reciprocity fee which is good for the life of the passport when we enter. This fee predates Bush’s overseas theatrics.
