I think the whole Marine thing was establish by Charles V emperor of the holy roman empire, by creating The tercio pikeman the first marine infantry in the world :o

"The Spanish Marine Infantry (Infantería de Marina), the oldest Marine force in the world, was established on February 27, 1537 by Charles V when he permanently assigned the Compañías Viejas del Mar de Nápoles (Naples Old Sea Companies) to the Escuadras de Galeras del Mediterráneo (Mediterranean Galley Squadrons)."

There's been marine infantry since antiquity -- early Roman empire (early second century A.D.) and perhaps before.

Tomás's point about the first large-scale amphibious invasion being Chilean is interesting. That landing in 1890 influenced the planning for another in the Americas, eight years later: the landing of American troops in Cuba, in support of Cuban revolutionaries against Spain.
