Why not countries from Anglosphere?

Postby Asean on Tue Feb 19, 2008 12:03 am

Hi cool kitties and cats,

I'm wondering with so many english educated people going to chile from America, why not go to countries like Australia and new zealand where there are less cultural and language barrier?
What makes you stick to Chile instead of staying in the Anglosphere states?

Asean,
I looked into Austrailia and New Zealand. They suffer from the same conditions as Europe and the USA. New Zealand would be my choice of the 2 BTW. I also looked at Fiji, Vanuatu, Ireland, The Sheck Republic, and Romania among others.

In looking at the government structure, debt to GDP, export VS import ratio, general business climate, economic freedom, corruption index and a few other vitals, I am convinced that Chile is among the best if not the best environment available. My goal is sustainable development of projects. I have identified 9 potential projects to study.

As far as the language issue, I will hire someone like Tombrad2 who is familiar with the language and customs to both guide me and help manage the projects. Each project has the potential of between $25 Million USD and $500 Million USD.

I will attempt to become somewhat conversant in Espanol but I know that I will never fully master the finer points.

I like the fact that there is a virtual wilderness there. I am not very fond of larger cities and really prefer creating something in the hinterland.

If you would like more, Please feel free to PM.

Cheers...........Gene

Also, so take a different view of the question, it is not business aspirations which motivate my move to Chile, but rather the Chilean culture and people. While I must admit that I have not visited the countries that you mentioned, I have traveled quite a bit throughout South America, Central America the Carribean and a bit in Europe and for me Chile is something special. I think this is the principal reason why native English speakers may choose Chile over an English speaking country, I cannot speak to others' reasons for choosing Chile, but for me it is the general ambiance and essense of the Chilean culture that pulls me in

In Chile....non-Chilean latins are more the foriegners than than the EuroAmer-gringo...to start with ...and as well in CHile they live by only two rules....what a man can do and what he can't...those two rule cut through all the BS very quickly and although there is still a lot of it, you can see it coming from way far off....in CHile, you can stop to enjoy the fruits of your labor and often times you have no choice...everything has stopped because everyone is doing precisely that....and when you stop you taste, smell and see the real actual flavors of what you have accomplished not just a heavily marketed and commercialized version of what advertizers want you to think you might want to imagine one day as being the smell of success...

A few quick observations from my perspective:

* I agree with what El Puelche has poetically stated: Chilean culture and society, while more "northwestern European" in character than (in my experience) those of any other Latin American country, still allow the savor of life -- nay, often its very essence -- to be enjoyed.

* Spanish is not a difficult language to master, even for a middle-aged person who over the years had largely slipped into monolingualism. Indeed, it probably is the easiest of the great languages of the world to gain a competency in.

* And who among us can forget the qualities of the Chilean people, their land, and their sky?

I did not consider Australia and New Zealand, mainly because of the distance and expense to travel there. I would like to visit a country first for two or three times before deciding. While it is expensive to travel to Chile, I assume it is not as expensive to travel to Chile as compared to traveling to Australia or New Zealand.

I chose Chile because of its low population density. Call me a nut, but, I am convinced that the world has either peaked or will soon peak in oil production. Long story short, I believe the best place to live in a post peak world is one where there is low population density.

Chile is desirable also because both my wife and I speak Spanish. She is a native of Colombia.

Chile is also desirable because it is a stable democracy with a stable economy, unlike most, if not all other Latin American countries.

I do not want to live outside the Western Hemisphere, for various reasons. Asia and Europe are out of the question, due to population density. Africa is not well developed economically. Language would be a problem there.
