Nope. Never happen. At least not for a loooong time. I think Chile should work on being the next Chile before trying to be the next Japan. Maybe your misunderstandings come from the fact you've never been here before? Understandable. Chile hasn't even solved the hot water problem yet, my friend. Go in your bathroom where you live now and turn on the hot water. You turn on a faucet and hot water comes out, right? It don't work that way in Chile.

In Japan when you mail someone a package that has their address on it, it goes to their house.

In Chile I've had two different packages go to a government office in Santiago where they are held hostage until I pay a tax. These packages had my address on them. So far I'm out 1,400.00 dollars since one of the packages was stolen. The mail service is better in Mexico than Chile.

The next Japan? Muahahahahahaa! :D

Oh well,
It will be great if Chile is the next japan cause the old japan is not changing her xenophobic ways to her neighbours despite her economic success. You will be surprised to find brazilian japanese return to japan and being discriminated against

Keep dreamin' about Chile being the next Japan.

And about your comment about Brasileno Japoneses - yes, I know about it as I am associated with muchos (people of Japanese origin) in Sud America (some that were held hostage by the Tupac Amaru in the Japanese embassy in Lima, Peru).

The reality is that I, as a US person of similar ethnic background will always be treated better in SudAmerica than in the home of my great grandparents.

I have to give credit to los brasileños, I don't ever recall being stared at there, especially in company with my pareja chilena (of mainly visible Spanish and German stock) as I am in Chile.

More reason Chile should be capitalizing on her political and economic alliance with the giant of Sudamerica.

A standard analysis of South America is "what if the Japanese controlled Brasil??", the world should shudder on what would happen in that parallel universe.

The thing about Japanese identity is tied up with their obsession with bloodlines and clan ties, very tribal and unique in our modern world.
You can speak japanese fluently, born there and even be a success in your field but if you're not japanese, forever you'll be relegated to gaijin(foreigner) status.
Mayoshi Son a korean descent and founder of softbank faced such barriers in his registry family that his japanese wife has to go to the authorities to set a precedent about having a korean surname
Many chinese and koreans who stay there for generations faced subtle discrmination though this two cultures inspired and influenced the japan we know today. With Japan facing aging populace and lack of talents in our globalised world, such shortsighted approach towards her close neighbours does not bode well for her future.
If only the japanese has geniune hospitality love and care towards other people not of their kindred and not fake politeness, they can truly be a great people but of course such realm belongs to the manga anime world of imagination

Interesting opinions.. on the topic of the xenophobic ways of the Japanese.
But ,make no mistake Chileans can be very friendly with foreigners, specially Anglos and such.
But is a different tune when it comes to Peruvians ,Argentinians, Brazilians, and other latin countries.
It is very patent on the Peruvians, who are being called "Monos" .
Again, it is not something talked openly (Nothing is, in Chile), but once you are in the 'In" circle, you start listen the xenophobic remarks.More palpable in Santiago, where a large population of Peruvians live.

Chile is more classicists than racist. A wealthy Peruvian may be ugly like a monkey but will be very respected, peruvians are poor when they come, but once they have a sound economic situation are well integrated. Class discrimination is widespread both for aliens and Chileans, "roto" is often a derogatory word, had you heard on "piteate un flayte" campaign? :D

Chile the next Japan?.. not a chance!... like chuck said.. they need to get a few basics right first.. not wrong about hot water!.. not only that but considering houses are dependant on bottled liquid gas.. they really should have better/safer gas connections.. so far i have seen a lot of dodgy gas connections.. went to open a bank account today only to find out that the only account that me and the mrs could open as a joint account was one that had many many limitations BUT the worst of all of them was that it ONLY allowed 9 withdrawals a year! 9? thats silly.. and any extra withdrawals would result in a 3000 pesos fee!.. FRUSTRATING to say the least... OH and let me tell ya bout the banks opening hours.. 9am - 2pm.. mon to friday.. too bad if your at work then and need to pop into a branch!.. there are many small things that make Chile inefficient and therefore I personally dont see it happening anytime soon or in my lifetime.. having said all of that there is just as many positives if not more otherwise i wouldnt be here..

I agree completely that Chile surely will never become into "next Japan", but by very different reasons.

I was in Tokyo in 1983 and made lot of friends there, was guest in some houses (a very rare privilege for an alien) and may I say that the standard of living of common people in Japan was close and -sometimes worse- to those in Chile. I guess you see with gringo eyes, where hot water and fast tramitation is considered as basic for living, well in Japan some apartments had not hot water and quality of instalations was quite precarious :)

Some friends of mines, japanese told me "this is the real japanese miracle, the country is very rich and all we live very poor". Probably this situation has changed and now living in Japan may be modern and comfortable BUT remember, when I was there in the early 80s Japan was an emerging superpower, now they are declining

My moral is that there are a point, where people from a country turn into fat cats, and demands for many gadgetry and comfort, and they demand too much to government, this is, maybe, the start of decadence, then comes ilegal inmigration, and well... you know

On the subject, I think that Chile has potential and vocation to turn into a small, isolated, and prosperous country, we are far away from that but this is also a good thing because there are oportunities. Also may we never do it, who knows, really I don´t mind too much what happen at country level, I am busi tryimg to improve as individual! my pocket first :D

Yea, there are quite economic freedom, but take into account that Chilean economy is very small, Chile´s potential is just in economic niches, good individual opportunities anyway for those who know how to take advantage of niches
