THE NEW CHILE FORUM

Postby admin on Wed Feb 13, 2008 3:58 am

We have a new forum. I believe. If you have any problems please PM me. If you can not access the forum to post or PM you can use the contact form on the front of allchile.net.

I will have a lot more to say by way of introduction to the new system shortly.

8_0 And yes. The Chile blob made it. I know you guys where more concerned about him than anything else getting left behind.

Please take stock of anything that did not seem to get moved. Typically problems will be related to things like photos that where posted in line that where too large for the new forum. Everything else should have made it.

Although as yet I've neither ability nor capacity to post photographs, I'm curious, Charles: do you mean to say one mustn't place too many photographs (whatever number that might be) in a single posting?

ALSO: I appreciated the capability on the old 'site of calling up threads begun or added to since my last entrance into the forum (same exists here), then clicking on the name of the thread to take me to the first of however many postings might have added to the thread since my last checking in (that capability doesn't seem to exist here: any chance of adding it?)

No, what tends to happen is the links get broken to photos during a move like this. Just files left behind kind of thing. If I can identify them, I should be able to dig them out of the backup and fix the link. So far, I have not run in to any, but there might be some orphaned files around.

Photos in general:
Photos that are over about 500 pixels will tend to break the template of the forum and everything goes all crazy. The other thing is that photos that are too large will also slow down the loading of the site. So say someone posted 30 photos that are 2400px across and 5 mb tiff files, that would be larger than the entire size of the forum currently on disk. Currently the system should resize photos you upload on the fly. I have also limited photos to only 3 photos per post (I am still testing this, I might increase that). You could make multiple posts with 3 photos in each. This is just to discourage people from getting carried away. For the most part, large collections of photos should go in the photo gallery which is built for photo management. The idea is that in the forum we like to post a few photos to illustrate something once and a while and move the conversation along, not for the forum to be full blown photo gallery.

On the unread posts button, let me check. It is around here. I have seen it. There are a bunch of related features in your "User Control Panel" it might be in there, but let me check if I can track it down.

I am still very much getting use to a lot of the new features myself. There are also a whole bunch of new modifications under development by phpbb3 community that produces this forum. Some of them are really cool. For example, one I am waiting to install adds country flags to users profiles both where you are posting from and where you are from originally. So, each user can have fly their own sets of Union Jacks. There are a lot of more practical additions also coming in the months ahead, and I am likely going to write some modifications myself for the forum to make my job easier.

So hang in there.

Well one quick fix that is almost the same is the pull down menu at the bottom of the forum that lets you display all posts for say the last 1 day, 7 days, 30 days and so on. Still not the same as the unread posts button. I am still looking. If I have to, I will install one.

Also at the bottom of each topic there is a "book mark topic" button, and a subscribe unsubscribe topic button to let you get email notifications of new posts.

I found it!!

It got renamed and is in a different location:

this is the link: search.php?search_id=newposts

the button is called "view new posts" and it is located on the front page of the board, just below the recent topics section, and before the Announcements section and regular forums list. About half way down the page. It would have been on top, if I had not installed the recent posts module above it.

Hope that helps. :skeub:

Thanks, Charles; we're halfway there!
The other half is something (on the old 'site, a small, clickable icon of a paper page, placed just before the title of the thread -- I think) that allowed the viewer to go directly to the first of the posts added to a thread since the viewer had last logged in. I really liked it, as I log in very erratically -- at different times and on different days of the week, always changing, and sometimes several times a day -- but with that tool needn't keep track of the last date and time at which I did log in.

Or the abstract of foreign exchange; or the weather (wait? did we have that?). But, hey!, we've still got the Purple Blob!

Seriously, I like PB.

I have not got around to installing it yet.

on my todo list:

    the rss feed
    user site map
external links opening in a new window
rebuilding the very front page of http://www.allchile.net and doing something interesting with it (not sure what that is)
installing a new exchange rate box. The old one was causing problems.
Installing a country flags for users to select what country they are in, and where they are from for their profile.

there are bunch of mods I am waiting for them to complete testing on, and then I will likely go nuts installing new stuff.

Let me know if you think of anything else.

I think that feature is still around for following new posts in a forum. The pull down menu at the bottom of the page should do what your describing. There is also the advance search feature. Again, I am still trying to figure out how everything works too, so it might take me a while to find the equivalent here of everything.

say, by the way you might be able to find the answer in the faq.php for the site.

Chances are you can find a lot of what is missing faster there, than me running around randomly clicking buttons to find out what they do and reporting back.

I'll still do my best to help, but I am still trying to figure out all the new buttons on the administration end of things without breaking the forum (there are million new ones). So, it will take a while.

By the way, Charles, I certainly can live without the foreign-exchange table. If, however, you add one, it could be more useful if it incorporated gold, silver, and (because this is Chile) copper prices.
