No, what tends to happen is the links get broken to photos during a move like this. Just files left behind kind of thing. If I can identify them, I should be able to dig them out of the backup and fix the link. So far, I have not run in to any, but there might be some orphaned files around.
Photos in general:
Photos that are over about 500 pixels will tend to break the template of the forum and everything goes all crazy. The other thing is that photos that are too large will also slow down the loading of the site. So say someone posted 30 photos that are 2400px across and 5 mb tiff files, that would be larger than the entire size of the forum currently on disk. Currently the system should resize photos you upload on the fly. I have also limited photos to only 3 photos per post (I am still testing this, I might increase that). You could make multiple posts with 3 photos in each. This is just to discourage people from getting carried away. For the most part, large collections of photos should go in the photo gallery which is built for photo management. The idea is that in the forum we like to post a few photos to illustrate something once and a while and move the conversation along, not for the forum to be full blown photo gallery.
On the unread posts button, let me check. It is around here. I have seen it. There are a bunch of related features in your "User Control Panel" it might be in there, but let me check if I can track it down.
I am still very much getting use to a lot of the new features myself. There are also a whole bunch of new modifications under development by phpbb3 community that produces this forum. Some of them are really cool. For example, one I am waiting to install adds country flags to users profiles both where you are posting from and where you are from originally. So, each user can have fly their own sets of Union Jacks. There are a lot of more practical additions also coming in the months ahead, and I am likely going to write some modifications myself for the forum to make my job easier.
So hang in there.
