The TripAdvisor site is another good place for travel/tour related info:

got to plug the sister site of the forum, http://www.allsouthernchile.com

There are few car rental agencies listed, but they are the same big ones you will find all over Chile.

Not a big Pucon fan myself, but worth a day trip. The termas around Pucon are nice. Termas Geometricas are really cool, and their are photos here:

There are many more photos of great locations in the area at:

Wife and I do a bit of "treking" we made it to TDP last feb but decided against the W as we were ill prepared.
Ie. tent, sleepingbags provisions etc not up to the task.
We intend to "hit" it next time thow.
When renting a car be sure to get a permission slip to enter Argentina before you leave the rental agency. Also choose a car with high ground clearance for the "ripio".

Good luck............

I would suggest if you have little time (two weeks?) you spend your time enjoying Isla Chiloe and the time traveling there. It's an awesome trip. Go see the penguins - a bit of a touristy idea, but hey, when's the nest time you might see penguins! Isla Chiloe is beautiful, and if you have time, some time before there in the lakes districts. Car rental is expensive, but if you've put that into your budget, check out the rates via chilewiki or other sites. But, really, go enjoy the lore, and history of Isla Chiloe. Let it wet your whistle for a longer expedition next time. And, allsouthernchile.com has some really great info and pictures on places to visit coming down from Santiago. Have fun, drive safe, and come back soon!

Ahhh, and if you rent a car, and take the ferry onto Isla Chiloe, there is a sweet little community just a few kilometers from the north end of the island, look for signs on the right side, take the rocky road and you will come to a little coastal area with a private protected area with cabins. A litte expensive for our budget, but absolutely spectacular cabins on a bay. It was $60 a night, two bedrooms, European-style feather comforters (good for nights) and full kitchen, hot water, all that stuff. It was a wonderful respite on a long trip to the south. Sorry, don't know much about south of Futaleufu, but the weather is hot, hot hot here now. Several forest fires going, lots of dust, and PLEASE....don't drive too fast. I have some photos of some unfortunate rental car owners who thought they needed to get somewhere faster than the roads required, and lost. It's a dusty, dangerous road south. Please have a safe trip.

Thanks all for the replies. We intend to drive down to Chiloe via the Lake District and then fly down to TDP. Can't wait!
