Speak Japanese? - I'd say 95% do not. Keep abreast of what happens in Japan and Asia? - Only if there is a job, career or academic reason for doing so.

Most are second and third generation and I'd say 80% or more have intermarried with Chileans.

One thing abt staying in Asian cities is the people are generally not very nice..all is abt money and money:(
It's like the capitalist fever sweeping across the region...and the talented and nice people move to the West...
Japan has the highest suicide rates of students and workers...and I believe in time China and korea will join the fold...
No point being a wealthy country if the people are unhappy which many aren't here...chicken and egg issue go figure..

Koreans as stated before are the most numerous Asians in Chile. Their original center is the comuna of Patronato across the Rio Mapocho in Santiago.

The Chinese seem scattered about such that even small communities might have some kind of Chinese restaurant.

Other than that, Asians seem to be invisible in Chile.

Take advantage of the stares and attention you will get.

Very true. You can also add the quiet desperation of many in the States these days.

I predict the children of the initial Korean immigration wave will end up intermarrying with Chileans (already happening) so I don't see an insular comuna Korea-town developing.

One story I heard for the Korean immigration was that the original thinking of the immigrants was if you can't immigrate directly into the USA, then go to Chile first and then try from there. Can't confirm that story, wish there were more ethnic Asians in Chile participating on this forum.

America seems to be having problems as a Superpower...overstretching herself playing world police like the Roman empire..
In some ways in homefront it's worse than Asia, with her lax control on drug abuse and gun violence..
If Chile can find her path to prosperity without the US or Asian intervention...it will truly be a miracle!

Oh believe me you will know that you stand out because of your physical characteristics - THIS IS CHILE.

Language, still far from fluent but I can understand most of what is spoken to me and communicate sufficiently enough to take care of life's daily chores and create rapport with a native speaker when needed. Of course, my pareja speaks virtually no english and we are still together after 6 years.

RE the USA: Hey, looks like you might add to the discussion on "The State of the States" topic.

Pareja refers to spouse or girlfiend?
Anyway how's the sushi, kimchi and dimsum in Chile?I assume you cook since eating out is pricey as there's no open air streetfood like in Asia..

Pareja is the term for a relationship where you are not married but in a married-like relationship usually due to the fact that one or both partners are separated from their original spouse and have not bothered to obtain an annulment or divorce.

Well like in the States, the majority of sushi joints here are owned by Koreans. There are a handful of Japanese owned places in Santiago though. You do not have the albacore tuna sushi which is the staple in most parts of the world but the salmon and mackerel ones are great.

Kimchi, I'm sure with the quantity of Koreans here there is decent kimchi to be had. I usually wait till I visit my relatives in the States and have the Hawaiian style kimchi.

Dimsum is still a new addition to the Chilean restaurant scene. I remember eating at the FIRST dimsum restaurant in Santiago back in 2003 or 2004.
