The State of the States

Anything at all (keep it clean) goes here that does not fit in to any of the other forums.

Good grief! So, Vicki, what's the explanation? Why prohibit the use of ordinary, seemingly inoffensive slang?

Hey! RWS! I've got less posts than you! I have no idea...I've gotten in trouble so many times for things like "moving pictures" "Richard Cheney" and a few other clicks of the keyboard. I think it's the Wizard of Oz. In all seriousness, there are certain words that trigger some great spam thingamajiggy, and I don't know what they are. But you can't write m-o-v-i-e. For whatever reason. By the way! Just watched 1984 again last night - how timeless and intense. M-O-V-I-E-! I SEE FIVE FINGERS BROTHER!

I never saw the m0vie, but the book certainly was depressing. When I read it, late in childhood, I certainly didn't think that it might work itself into American reality at all. Amazing that that Blair could prove more prescient than imaginative.

The "film" 1984 was depressing also. But good to revisit a work that was so incredible at the time it was written!

And...Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed. I thought that my Obama/Hope post would invite scathing rebuke from the board! I was hoping for a verbal lashing, something to spice up the thread. What's wrong with you all? I always thought our forum should be called Chile Libre, but it's a bit timid these days!

OK. I'm off to the food and beer thread. Luego.

Well my signature line explains my feelings towards politics in general to a tee.

If you want to continue believing in fairy tales and the MSM, that is your choice.

I tire of arguing in this arena especially with those still in the States enmeshed in the continual brainwashing of the MSM and the PTB.

Believe me, your life will improve if you forget about politics and concentrate on the thing that really matter in life.

I've always liked Goethe and his writings. Not for that, though, do I agree with your tagline, EE.UU., but because it's largely true (why only largely? because every human being can justly assert, "dum spiro, spero").

Perhaps it's the lateness of the hour, but I really cannot now puzzle out either "MSM" or "PTB". Would you be so kind as to tell us what the two are acronyms of?

Sorry, my apologies as I post on other boards where these are common acronyms:

MSM - Mainstream media
TPTB - The Powers That Be

Thanks, EE.UU. I still think we'd do well (are you listening, Charles?) to have a "sticky" with acronyms employed in this forum.

I read the book 1984 back in high school, but I never saw the movie 1984. How does the movie compare to the book?

Very interesting. If you go back and edit your post that you wrote m-o-v-i-e in, it is there, but does not show.

sorry, about the auto editing. It is just that the spammers over the course of the life of the forum have posted things like "p&orno mo0vie" and related words like the first name of the vice president. Thus, it was just easier for me to add them to the banned word list because they typically add them to links. If they are banned, then they get replaced or deleted automatically and break the links, removing the appeal of posting spam on our forum.

I can understand banning the nickname for "Richard" or the shortened, slang form for "p0rnographic". But, "m0vie"? That really seems inoffensive to all but the most careful speakers of English -- none of us!

yea, it was word combinations I was targeting to go with m0vie. I'll take it off. Spammers also seem to be fairly well behaved now. Most of those words where added in the old forum. I have to go through and revise the list.

Personally I find the vice president offensive all by himself. Nothing to do with Spammers.
