Two forum posts make it to top ten in Google???!

Postby carlos on Wed Jan 23, 2008 5:10 am

Today I was doing a search on "window cleaning in Chile" and was quite surprised that two of the threads I began made it to the top ten under that search phrase. Quite surprised indeed. I don't think I have ever seen something move to the top ten quite so quickly in Google.

Hmm...very interesting.

That does tell me though that window cleaning as a profession is not very big in Chile. Even the companies that do it offer it as one line of service and not exclusively.

I wonder if I can capitalize on that somehow? I mean in terms of taking advantage of the lack of web pages on that topic (Google shows only 135,000 found which is nothing by Google standards).

I'll have to think about this some...anyway just thought that was interesting...how quickly just a couple of simple posts on this forum made it to the top in a Google search.

I wonder if there are other areas where one could offer a service or product through a web site that is not presently being offered much if at all in Chile. If today's search is any indication one could move up in rankings quite quickly developing a web site around such things.

Of course whether there are a lot of people searching Google in Chile is another matter :).

I wonder....

Hmmm...two posts of mine on contact management software on this forum (which are even more recent than the one's I mentioned above) made it to the top two spots in a google search of "contact management software in Chile".

Hmmm...very interesting indeed!

Don't know what to make of this yet but it's kinda exciting that there seem to be a number of relatively untapped Google search phrases that one could capitalize on by making a content rich site about the area of interested indicated by the search phrase.

I wonder what the interest areas are like in Spanish in terms of Google rankings? Anybody know a good translation of "contact management software" into Spanish? Software de gestión de contacto maybe??

And I wonder how many Chileans actually use Google? Any ideas anyone?

Does anyone have any clue, percentage wise, as to how many Chileans have Internet access? Most of my relatives do but they are not your average Chilean.

Still if enough people do, and if enough Chileans search on an area of interest, that is not presently being served well through Google, well...there might be some possibility there for making some money through a content rich web site centered around that topic.

Hmmm...just thinking out loud ya all...so don't mind me...but if anyone has anything to say on what I have said...by all means share your thoughts...I would be most interested to hear them.

Well, something that I, a mere visitor (eventual immigrant, ¡ojalá!) to Chile, may be able to shed some light on. My experience: kinsmen all use the Internet, but, again, not typical Chileans; however, all my Chilean friends but one do, too, and they are more typical, I think; and I don't remember seeing any of the locutorios so common in Buenos Aires for the internetless interested. (That one exception, by the way, is a country pastor, so both markedly poorer financially than many and in a place that is poorer -- though perhaps more typical than Santiago or Valpo!)

Additionally, there are statistics on the Web (through UNESCO's website, if I remember correctly) that show Internet access is held by a larger percentage of the Chilean population than that of any other Latin American country. I don't remember those statistics but think that "penetration" of the Internet into Chile was roughly a third that into Canada or the United States.

Except if you plan to market window cleaning to expats in Chile (surely a ridiculously small market), what's the use for search engine research with keywords in English? This forum and its wiki have high rankings in Google often because there's little to no content in English on those keywords.

internet

if you go to nic.cl the domain register for chile, there is only something like 600,000 domains registered (can't remember the exact number) in the .cl tdl, and I bet like 50% of them are just registered and not operational sites. Another 80% of the ones that are operational sites are so poorly constructed, google can not index them. There are only 15 million people in Chile.

If you search google trends, you will find almost no stats kept outside of the key term "Chile". Chile may have a high percentage of internet users, but again the IT field in Chile is fairly basic. Web sites are at the bottom of the bottom, and English web sites are even less common.

That said, if you want to see what Chileans see however in Google you will need to connect through Chile, visit the google.cl, and set your browser to report Spanish. Basically, you need to fool google in to thinking you are Chilean.

Not our niche, so I am not too concerned about google.cl unless I am targeting Chileans for a particular site.

Don't under estimate this forums position however outside of simply Chile. We regularly pop to the front page for things like "expat forum" or "south America forum". Just think of how many of those are out on the internet, that are far larger and better established than we are? I never thought we would hit those terms, so never even bothered trying. They just kind of naturally showed up.

I do put some time and money in keeping us well positioned in the search engines, but a lot of our search engine appeal has simply been the community and the diversity of our topics. Lots of google lovens for the Chile forum.

Last year we seemed to at one point have a lot of people hanging around the forum that had no interest in Chile. They just showed up for the conversation. For example, that gun control thread we had. I got nasty emails from people 6 months after I locked the thread accusing me of all kings of BS, and they where people that I do not think would have been able to find Chile on map from the sounds of the email. They were just ticked that they found that thread, and where not able to add their two sense to it. They where mostly just late, it was nothing personal.

speaking of which. I am in the States now (I will start a thread about that when I get back), and I see at least two of our sites on the front page for "chile south America" in google. allchile.net is #2, and allsouthernchile.com is slightly down at about #8.

according to chillean newspaper, i don't know which there are more than 1.000.000 internet connections. in chiloe i found many libraries with free internet and many local users. internet shops from concepcion down to the south can be well visited since internet is not very expensive.

i would say, without any knowledge, there must be at least two to three million of users.
