Puma found dead in Temuco

Postby admin » Sun Nov 12, 2006 1:30 pm

The morning news reports that a Puma was found dead near the market in the center of Temuco. It looks like it got hit by a car. Sad that he got killed, but good sign that the population seems to be expanding.

That is a real shame. The Pumas would be a good way to control the street dog population in Temuco. The local City does not seem to interested in doing anything about it.

Puma

Postby rcg3000 » Sun Nov 12, 2006 2:30 pm

I am glad to know there are still Puma’s in Chile seems Chileans are experiencing some of the same issues we are experiencing here in the US with wildlife. The US has had several deaths due to Pumas in the recent past. As the human population encroaches on remaining areas populated by Pumas these confrontations are bound to happen. I agree about controlling dogs, but a human habituated Puma would be far more worrisome to me as a town citizen, maybe you know otherwise, since I have not experienced a dog problem. :D I appreciate wildlife and wish that human population growth would be more abstained, but that is most likely a futile hope. The pressures caused by population growth nearby major metro areas seem to generate an overcrowded condition for the predators on the fringes of their former environment.

Just joking about pumas and street dogs.

Nice thing about Chile, is that for the most part they have a realy large unpopulated moutain range to wonder around. Yea, there is some increase in humans enterning their turf, but for the most part they should be able to avoid major contact for many years to come. Chile is not like say Colorado in the states. I have never heard of a Puma attacking humans in Chile.

The street dogs eat the gringo tourist. The Pumas eat the street dogs. So, I guess the Pumas do eat people in a sense.

A puma killed and ate my neighbor's father a few years ago here in southern Chile. You might ask the surviving son whether an expanding predator population is a good sign. Our other neighbor works as a vet for the SAG and was called out to identify the remains.

I understand that since the ban on controlling pumas in California, they have become known as Jogger Population Control.
