Llaima Volcano East of Temuco Blows 6pm local time

Postby admin on Tue Jan 01, 2008 9:37 pm

Big blast from Llaima East of Temuco about 2 hours at around 6 pm today.

Not really a threat. More of a very cool natural event. There is not much in the area really, and Argentina picks up the ash. I might take a field trip out for photos of this one.

By the way, I did not get any sort of alert from the USG website by email this time.

Postby admin on Tue Jan 01, 2008 9:59 pm

Here is some video that works:

they are on yellow alert. The volcano is a national park, and there is about 130 tourist currently in the park and being evacuated. So far it seems to be a lot of steam, but they are saying an eruption is in the works.

Llaima last erupted back in 1994.

I think we might get some new ski runs.

can see it from temuco

Postby admin on Tue Jan 01, 2008 10:10 pm

I just discovered that I can see it from my house in Temuco. We can see the plains around it also.

I would take a photo, but the sun just set and it would not look like much. Perhaps in the morning.

The reason why you did not get an alert from the USGS is because they monitor volcanoes in certain areas of the world. Chile is not among the monitored areas:

real estate in pucon

a dollar? Yea, I suppose a view like that might run all the drunken Santiago teenagers out of town, and raise the real estate values in Pucon :puker:
:bom:

I think all the volcanologist will be good for the tourism economy around vilcun and small towns east. They needed a boost.

Is it true that it last erupted in 1994? I read that it was 1957. Anyways, it's at it again...and I wanted to go snowboarding a week ago...I guess I'll have to wait....or go to Chillan. Or is there somewhere closer besides anywhere near Pucon??

just to sort this out. This is two eruptions this year.

I just spent the weekend in Santiago, and on Friday night we flew out of Temuco. As the plane took off from the runway you could see this massive orange and red stream of lava outlining the volcano in the dark and a fountain of lava blowing out of the top. It was really cool to watch from the plane.

Tonight we flew back in to Temuco, and we made a point to sit on the side of the plane that faced towards the volcano but the cloud cover was too thick to see anything.

As for alternative snowboarding, try Huilo Huilo a bit more south.
