Credit card class action settlement $25+ refund

Postby admin on Mon Dec 17, 2007 3:10 pm

This is an interesting article on npr.org about a class action settlement.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=17265338

It seems if you used your visa or master card internationally outside the United States over the last 10 years, then you are eligible for a refund for a 1% or higher hidden fee that was charged by the credit card companies. The least you can get is $25, and the most depends on your ability to come up with your records for the last ten years.

I will see if I can dig up more info. You should have gotten a letter to your home address, but if you are like me it is likely in a box with the other junk mail in the States.

Let's see if we can find some other ways to claim it.

Here is the link to the class-action suit, how to claim, where, etc. Including PDF forms and links to view legal documents regarding the suit.

Also, this includes debit cards issued by major banks. A list of who can claim is pretty broad. After over six years of living abroad, and using our debit cards, and credit cards for purchasing round-trip flights originating out of country (Lacsa, Copa, etc...), purchasing building materials, paying contractors, we might have a nice little bit of "fun money".

ChaaaaChing!

Dang, the phone rang and Vicki beat me to it.

This is the page with your three options:

https://www.ccfsettlement.com/claim/?action=choose

One allows you to submit for the whole amount if you have the records. Most of these online banks now give you online statements. You can search for them.

1% refund on ten years of living abroad

Postby admin on Mon Dec 17, 2007 5:54 pm

Between me and my father we paid for 2 master degrees in Europe, ten years of travel, and a couple of businesses I have built, all payed for almost exclusively by using Visa or Mastercard transactions on U.S. accounts. Basically that is a better than a 1% refund on the last 10 years of my life.

They really are "everywhere you want to be" and "priceless".

It certainly sounds like a scam; but I'm greedy enough that I'll mark the website and examine it later.

the law suit

Postby admin on Tue Dec 18, 2007 12:03 pm

As far as selling your info, that is fairly easy to get without all the cost associated with this sort of deal.

All evidence indicates the law suit is real. This has been covered in detail by NPR, New York times, and half billion web sites.

I would watch out for scams piggybacking on it however. If you don't trust the mailing, you can download the forms yourself.

Granted, if I was the NSA and wanted look at all Americans that have done anything outside the United States for the last ten years, this sure would be a nifty way to collect a lot of info and step around issues of needing a court order to search those records.

Even the more detailed forms downloaded from the web site do not ask for all your information. They ask for basic information to identify that you do have a card.

Hummm....greed is a terrible thing RWS :-) I won't be surprised at all if behind all this there is a Nigerian connection. They are very well known here in the States for ripping off people with cc and in the internet.

Other evidence that the settlement is real

Postby admin on Tue Dec 18, 2007 12:28 pm

This is from the USA today about it:
http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/200 ... fund_N.htm

This one says because of the nature of it, even people that did not travel but bought some product online from a company outside the United States would qualify.

It's not a scam. This was covered on CNN a couple of weeks ago. It's for real.

Don't want to be a downer, but something tells me the cost of verification and payout by the CC companies/banks will be passed on to the users somehow.

Am already dreading that much higher fees at an overseas ATM will be an indirect result.

getting burned

Postby admin on Tue Dec 18, 2007 4:10 pm

I really do not care. I am already beyond numb with the credit card rip off industry. Money going the other way in any form is an improvement.

Besides, 336 million settlement to end a raft of related class action law suits across an entire industry is a fairly sweet deal on their part. Those guys just made that in the time it took me to type this.
