earthquake reports in chile

Postby admin on Sun Dec 16, 2007 9:38 am

I talked to a friend in vina that lives on the 17 floor of a building. She said it was a rather up and down ride for about 30-60 seconds.

She also said that everyone on the beach started running for the hills, even though there was no tsunami warning or danger.

automatic earthquake alerts

Postby admin on Sun Dec 16, 2007 9:42 am

Another member had posted the instructions before on the forum for setting up alerts. They seem to work nicely. If you go to the addresses above, and create an account you can have alerts emailed you. If you have a phone that has email say through Movistar or some other company in Chile, then you can get real time alerts.

I got a series of them with updates while I was out of the office yesterday in the hour following the quakes around Vina.

I have mine set to any earthquake in Chile, larger than a 5.0 .

I mentioned the 20-25 seconds 3-4ish movement in my location in real time as an addition to the post I was replying to on Trip Advisor that other day.

Anyone living on the coast should be aware of the official tsunami evacuation routes for your area or how to spot them (a green and white sign with a wave and stick figure running).

The city or province should also have a map detailing the safe areas and routes.

There are also signs typically in most towns on the hill that indicate the line where you are safe.

Vina is kind of funny after National geographic used them a few years ago for a computer generated model of a Tsunami disaster. Now everyone in the area is paranoid about Tsunami's.

Are natural disasters a threat in Chile. Of course, but so are they everywhere in the World. I am still more worried about the human disasters.
