teaching english

Postby el kayakista on Sat Nov 04, 2006 8:28 am

hey charles

i'm just curious about the strictness of having a degree to teach english in chile. like myself i have an equivalency of a 2 year degree, but my college does not offer it. so therefore i have college credits, but no associates. i know of a lot of people out there that's in the same boat here in korea and sometimes they find it hard to find teaching jobs.

i'm just curious because if i do decide to break away from IT work, then i would need to find temp work until i get my own establishment going.

TSOL / CELTA / TEFL certified teachers

Postby admin on Sat Nov 04, 2006 12:18 pm

The Certificates are likly the most important. Experience in a specific field is important also. It does not need to be English teaching however.

so what are you saying

Postby el kayakista on Sat Nov 04, 2006 1:07 pm

so what are you saying charles? are you saying an english speaking, NT System Administrator, with 8 years in the industry, and that can speak survival spanish that i would be able to find a computer job in chile? or just having a specialized skill will or could substitute formal education? that would be cool if that's the case and i know that a lot of american companies tend to substitute experience over education.

if it's possible, then how high of a demand is it for people like me? i'll pass you my resume or post on this forum so you can make a fair judgement.

i never thought to explore that possibility until now.

Think very carefully before working for a Chilean company or boss.

The hours are long, many treat you like a slave (patron-worker relationship), and the pay is very low. Then there is the backstabbing and other crap that goes on behind your back with the other employees.

I'm sure it's a great way to learn the language though.

depends

Postby admin on Sun Nov 05, 2006 9:18 pm

Depends on a lot factors. Ideally I would say run your own show. Barring that there are some companies that are looking for English speaking IT people. In fact, I almost never see an add in the paper for an IT person that does not require English. Of course much depends on your specialty. If you are sufficiently good enough with computers as to be more or less a jack of all trades, then it can be done. I would not expect to find work designing processors or doing research here, but your general run of the mill networking and such it would be possible.

Still, I have to agree that working for a Chilean boss might be a quick way to drive yourself to insanity. A better one might be to target international companies that have offices here. There hiring and management practices should be more of what you would expect.

On the English school front, there might be a lot in way of company training programs in English. All their IT people need to learn English because the primary docs for most IT work are written in English first.

Hello Charles,

I'm about to set off for South Korea for a year at the end of the month but I'm really interested in working in Chile as an EFL teacher. I have a
Language Studies-TEFL degree from the University of Wales Swansea and will have a years experience by the time I leave South Korea.

Am I best off applying when I get to Santiago next October? Or can I apply prior to flying out to Chile?

Do you recruit all year round?

Is nationality important? I'm a native speaker and a British citizen.

Cheers!

I should clarify that job offer. I am not offering the job.

That said, the owner of EES is my brother.

Best source of info is to visit their link above, or email them directly.

Hello Charles,

I have emailed the address provided a few days ago and I have yet to have a reply, only thing I wanted to know are they just interested in teachers already in Chile? (if you have any inside info that is! ) As I'm not in Chile until next year, would it be better to wait and apply when I'm in Santiago? It looks a really good company and I'm interested in any company who pays a fair wage and provides a work visa.

Cheers!

I don't have ESL certification, just 12 years experience in Asia and an MS Ed in Curriculum Design...........how much weight would that carry? Would they still be wanting a certificate? I currently teach in a Korean public Elementary School for EPIK (English Program in Korea).

As far as know they generally only hire people that are in the country, but I can not really speak for them.

Best to call them. They get lots of email, so let them know you are serious.

They do much more than just teach English. They may be looking for various executive training type teachers.

Charles do you think we can arrange an interview with your brother? I have been interviewing some of the other English Language school directors over the last several months. We would love to add your brother.

Let me know

Cheers
