BIG QUAKE IN NORTHERN CHILE

Northern Chile issues in the News. We are looking to hit those news topics, Issues, and discussion that are in the Spanish press and that not all of the Gringos can get to for lack of Spanish or they just do not have access to the news source.

Two dead and a hundred and fifty seriously injured, according to NPR this morning.

No word on animals or on damage to structures.

Columbia Hail Storm

Postby admin on Fri Nov 16, 2007 8:55 am

say I have a related question about disasters and news sources.

Did anyone, anywhere see on any news program, anything about the massive massive hail storm in Bogata Colombia and the tornadoes?

I mean like the hail was so deep that cars and buses where stopped in traffic with hail up to the windows on big city buses, and cars where overturned by the melting flow.

It looked totally apocalyptic. It was nearly as shocking a natural event as tsunami in Asia (less the deaths).

A friend in Columbia sent us a power point presentation with photos. I will post it shortly.

After there was some Tornadoes also in Bogata (yes, in the mountains near the equator).

I have not been able to find anything on any news station covering it on the internet. I found one reference in google news, and it was no where near as impressive as the photos I have. Their photos are obviously hours or a days after the storm when the hail has melted. I can not believe that it was not on the front page of every news paper in the World, if for no other reason than cheap environmental .

I did, but the news showed just few seconds of the story. The scene was amazing and afterwards I tried to find it in the internet but it was nowhere to be found. Here the are consumed with the coming elections and anything else is put in the back burner and yes it was so impressive that i had to take a second look, people submerged in hail!! I went crazy looking for that news in CNN website and nothing!!

The most impressing damage was a terrace from Hotel in Antofagasdta (Radison?) who fall over two cabs, this image weas widely spread, but no casualities there. Hundred of injured people but no vital risk in the area and two old leadied died in Tocopilla.

As usual, most of old clay construction falled down and some brnad new also (such as Radissons terrace). Not big deal, we are accustomed and still waiting for "El Grante"

Colombia Record Hail Storm never reported

Postby admin on Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:01 pm

Here are the Colombia hail storm photos. I have posted a power point ppt file and a adobe file with slide shows. And below I will post some of the highlights for those that want to know if it is worth downloading.

I strongly urge everyone to have look at this. It has my vote as one of the most under reported natural disasters of 2007:

The pdf version

and the power point version:

Colombian Spanish is really easy to understand. They almost over articulate every single syllable.

You do have a TV right? There was a lot of live video (thanks to cameras being in phones and such) shot of the quake. Got tired of seeing it over and over again on the four main stations and have not turned on the news for over a day. I believe the 24horas TVN news program has a section on YouTube. Try <http://www.youtube.com/24horas>

My wife is from Colombia. I have been to Colombia six or seven times. I have found Colombians easier to comprehend compared to Spanish speakers from other countries.

Since Colombia receives fewer foreign visitors than most, if not all, Latin American countries, you will probably find the Spanish spoken there to be less likely to have been influenced by outsiders, and therefore, more like the Spanish in Spain than the Spanish spoken in Mexico.

I was in Bogota in January 2000 when there was a hail storm. An acquaintance told me hail in Bogota is an extremely rare event.

I'd guess that the cause is otherwise -- after all, fewer people visit Bolivia! A Venezuelan friend, retired from a professorship in a provincial university, credits the purity of Columbian Spanish (among the educated classes, at least) to an educational tradition which emphasized literature and rhetoric and to the influence of Andrés Bello.
