return to chile

Postby Rook on Sat Nov 10, 2007 3:10 pm

I am an American who lived/worked in Chile for 9 months in 2003. Main goal will be to improve my Spanish for better communication with the in-laws and see how it is to live in Chile. The first time in 2003 was spent mostly working all the time with little to no free time. Lately I found some blogs of foreigners in Chile and they seem to be constantly complaining about life in Chile but I am still optimistic.

Welcome to the forum. Yea, expats love to complain, but if you do a comparison against the number of complaints for just about every country in Latin America you will find Chile still beats all of them.

Welcome back.

Yeah, guilty yer honor, I love to complain. But I'd rather be here than the USA. Just for laughs, :-) I think I found the perfect example of the Chilean bathroom.

I could see myself having an emergency not being able to squeeze by that sink. :-)

yea, that looks like a very well designed and thought out bathroom compared to some of the hostals I have stayed in Chile.

I swear on some of them they built half bathroom, then like 10 years later (long after the plans where forgotten) they returned to finish the other half.

You see you got to have fun with the complaints, otherwise it will drive you mad and you will forget why Chile is so great in the first place.

More seriously, and to tell one on myself (at 70 kg. or so and 185 cm., the squeeze-by doesn't much concern me -- at the least, not yet!), I remember visiting friends near Valpo early one Spring in the mid- or late '90s. It was the first time that I'd confronted the once-ubiquitous calefacción in Chile, and between ignorance of the system and fear of blowing everyone -- including myself -- to kingdom come, I just forewent lighting the awesome thing.

I don't remember how many early morning near-ice showers went by in October or November before someone heard my stifled moans . . . or was it my chattering teeth?

More like a Dutch bathroom than anything I've seen in Chile.

And about the "complainers' forum": isn't there a Spanish proverb "No me busques que me vas a encontrar..." :twisted: it's tempting. But I also think that if you don't compain, things don't get better.
