GPS unit for Chile

Postby FrankPintor on Sat Nov 10, 2007 12:39 am

Does anyone have a recommendation for a GPS unit for normal road navigation with maps for Chile? I been searching through the websites of various manufacturers (Garmin, TomTom, and a few others) but I haven't found much.

Garmin eTrex Vista

Postby Putenio on Sat Nov 10, 2007 2:22 am

I use the Garmin eTrex Vista (b/w monitor, base map for The Americas (N&S) included). It doesn't talk but it works fine. At first it had home as the US and no satellite reception. Changed the home location and had 8 satellites and accuracy to less than 10 feet in Ilque. Surveyor for Pt. Montt had fun comparing it to his - said some colleagues use it. I haven't used it closer to Santiago but in SOChile it had all the main roads, good reception, and didn't kill batteries.

There's no official map from Garmin, but a couple sites have informal maps for some areas of Chile. See at the bottom of our wiki:

GPS

I have a Garmin e-trex vista and a Garmin 176 and both seem to work well and are easy to use. I sent my vista to a friend in Santiago last month to use until I return and he said it has worked well for him also in Chile, with most roads included.

I got a Garmin Nüvi 350 in the US (USD 299, reduced from USD 450 at Frys) and the GPS shop in Mallsport says it has maps of Chile which it will sell for (gulp) $149,000. Apparently they've been updated 3 weeks ago, and should be in stock again this week. Updates to the map cost (only ;-) $30,000.

Frank, do you happen to know what company is producing the Chile GPS map you're talking about?

No I don't, sorry. S'pose I could call the shop and ask, but I'm not in Santiago at the moment. Apparently the $149k is for the map plus SD-card, the map alone is less.

I am new to this and I am traveling to Chile in March. I thought it would be great to have a GPS while I am there. Can anyone suggest what the easiest way is to accomplish this? Do some US models actually have maps for Chile or should do I need to download maps to one? I just want it to work.

Thanks

I doubt any US-sold models would have more than a very sparse world map as far as Chile is concerned.

Yeah I kind of figured that, so any recommendations as to which maps are decent to download? I did find this http://www.smellybiker.com/
I just don't know how good they are.

Use this Link http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/catalogue.php you will find some great free base maps for your Garmin GPS including Chile. The maps are found in the Argentina selection for most of Chile. Use the installers to generate the groups of maps in mapsource and upload them to your GPS. Preview your maps in MapSource. I will be Chile for a couple of months starting in March. Good luck
